How important is your diet for weight loss?

Your diet is the cornerstone of your quest for weight loss. You should not rely solely on exercise when it comes to torching fat because it is your diet that has the biggest impact on your weight.

Certified fitness trainers, despite the nature of their work, agree that exercise only accounts for 15%-20% of the total effort needed to achieve a weight loss goal. The remaining 80%-85% of the outcome depends on what you eat every day.

Every meal and every snack counts!

A single meal will not make you overweight... But a month's worth of junk food can affect your weight. There is a significant relationship between what you regularly eat and your present weight trend. There are 3 kinds of weight trends: static or unchanging, upward and downward.

How much weight will drop off when you start eating healthier foods?

Ideally, you would modify your diet so that you are on a consistent downward trend. A total weight loss of 1 pound a week is considered healthy and sustainable.

2 pounds per week is considered the higher average for men and women. If you are already dropping as much as 2 pounds a week, do not be tempted to overdo your dieting and workouts. Too much physical exertion can be bad for you.

What are the best ways to lose weight through your diet?

The Caloric Deficit - Your daily caloric deficit will determine how much weight will come off in a week or month. One pound of body weight is equal to 3,500 calories.

To lose 1 pound per week you need to have a deficit of 500 calories every day. There are 2 ways to produce your daily/weekly calorie deficit goal: through exercise or through dieting.

I highly recommend that you create the deficit by using both weight loss components equally.

Try reducing your daily caloric intake by 250 calories and then work out at home or in the gym to burn off another 250 calories or so. This way, you will not be pressure to exercise or reduce your food intake too much.

If you can only manage to create a caloric deficit of 200 calories or less, don't be discouraged. We all experience low points during our weight loss journeys. The important thing is that you stay motivated and you make an effort to bounce back so you can start losing that weight!

Avoid Hidden Sugars - Refined sugar and high fructose corn syrup are commonly added to commercial foods and beverages as sweeteners. You will be shocked at how much sugar manufacturers put in their products. A small cupcake can have as much as 24 grams of sugar!

High fructose corn syrup is becoming even more common in food because it's cheaper to produce than sugar, which is derived from sugarcane.

Simple carbohydrates like refined sugar and HFCS are to be avoided as often as possible because they bog down your metabolism and also affect how your body responds to insulin.

Insulin is a natural hormone in our bodies that facilitates the absorption and utilization of blood glucose. How your body responds to insulin has a direct impact on your metabolism.

Excess sugar in your diet (especially in the form of HFCS) has been shown to cause some degree of insulin resistance, which affects how your body responds to excess blood sugar.

Refuel with Vegetables & Fruit - Hunger is an old enemy that often beats even the toughest ladies. When hunger pangs are not addressed properly, you may feel fatigued and cranky.

This can affect your mindset regarding exercise and further dieting. To avoid this scenario, increase your consumption of vegetables and have fresh fruit to sweeten the deal.

Protein-rich vegetables like white beans and lentils are excellent "hunger busters" as they provide a moderate amount of carbohydrates in addition to lots of protein.

Plant proteins can help stop hunger pains and keep you focused on your calorie deficit goals. Green leafy vegetables on the other hand, are naturally high in dietary fiber which helps fill up the stomach when digested.

How much fruit can you eat?

There is a general belief that you can eat as much fruit as you want because it's wholesome, natural food. Fruits are great in making a diet balanced and nutritious.

However, keep in mind that many fruits are high in natural fruit sugars and they can pack a lot of calories in every serving. Eat only a small quantity of fruits per day to benefit from the nutrients. Save the rest for tomorrow!

10 Signs You Need a Sight Test

Many people leave it far too long to get an eyesight test, because the signs that you may need to wear glasses or contact lenses often develop slowly, so people get used to their poor vision. It can come as quite a revelation, though, when they do wear glasses for the first time and they discover just how bad their eyesight has become.

If you have been wondering whether it might be time for an eye test, here are the main warning signs that you might need to start wearing eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Frequent headaches

There are many things that can cause headaches, including working for too long looking at a computer screen, but if the headaches have become a daily event for you, that could be a sign that you need an eyesight test. Headaches that are caused by poor eyesight usually happen after you have been concentrating on something for a long period of time. They usually start at the front of your head and then move along the sides of your head to your temples.

Blurry vision

Blurred vision and difficulty focussing on things can be an indication of a problem with your eyesight, but it could also be a sign of more serious problems as well. If you are experiencing blurred vision, you should make an appointment with an optician straight away.

Difficulty seeing at night

If you are finding more difficult to see in failing light or darkness than you used to, that too could be a sign that you need a sight test. You might simply have noticed that you tend to need a light switched on to read when the light is not particularly good.

You can see things at a distance

If you can't see things at a distance very well, that could be an indication that you are near-sighted, which can easily be corrected with eyeglasses or contact lenses. The first signs of this might be that have difficulty reading road signs when you are driving or you need to move to the front row of a cinema to watch a film.

Your eyes feel strained or tired

If you keep rubbing your eyes because they feel tired, that could be because you are straining your eyes to see things properly. This might manifest itself in your feeling generally tired when you have spent time concentrating on looking at anything, such as a computer screen or when you have been reading

You have to squint to see things

If you find yourself squinting a lot, that could be a sign that you need an eye examination. People squint, because it reduces the size of the pupils and that can help bring things into focus. While doing that may help for a while, the only real solution is probably to start wearing corrective lenses.

It takes a long time for your eyes to adjust to changes in light

How well the eyes adjust to changes in light is a good indication of the eye health. If bright lights dazzle you or it takes a long time for your eyes to adjust to the dark, it's time to get your eyes checked out.

Holding books away from you to read them

As we get older, our eyesight weakens and many people need reading glasses when they get a bit older. One of the first signs that you may need eyeglasses to read is when you start holding books and newspapers away from you to read them.

Your eyes keep watering

If you find that your eyes keep watering for no apparent reason, then that is another sign that your eyesight is not as good as it could be.

You haven't had an eye exam in a long time

If you haven't had a sight test for a long time, then you might be suffering some of the above symptoms completely unnecessarily. It is recommended that adults get a sight test at least every two years, so if you haven't had a sight test for longer than that, get yourself off to see an optician!

Having regular eye examinations is important whether you currently wear corrective lenses or not. If you haven't had your eyes tested in the last two years, then it's time you started looking for sight tests near you to find a qualified optician.

Is Smoking In Your Genes?

I don't mean that you are genetically programmed to smoke, although a small percentage of smokers do carry this gene, it usually manifests in chain smoking and smoking the cigarette right down to the butt.

The interesting thing is that most people with this gene don't smoke.

This article refers to the effect of smoking on your genes. The study of Epi-genetics looks at the 70% of gene expression that we can influence by our lifestyle and choices. One study showed that boys who started smoking at 12 would pass on the damaged gene to their children.

This isn't surprising and you may be thinking that you didn't start at 12, or that you are not a man. What impressed and concerned me about this study was the ability to pass on the negative effects of smoking to another generation, and also the likelihood that, the offspring would also be a smoker.

We know this isn't always the case, some people smoke when brought up in a smoking family but fortunately many don't.

These kinds of studies are rare and expensive, and because no one is going to be able to create a drug as a result, they are hard to fund. This means that the epigenetic effect of smoking is largely unknown.

But you can be certain that if you are a smoker of child bearing or child producing age that you will be passing on some genetic effect to your child. So what happens if the unthinkable occurs and your child is born with a genetic health problem? It may have nothing to do with smoking, but it might!

It doesn't matter what the truth is, you will most likely feel guilty, and sad, and a whole collection of powerful emotions.

Stop and Smell the Coffee - A Happiness View to Creating Wealth

Those of you who follow my articles and blog will know that I tend to reiterate that happiness comes before wealth. You won't be happy once you've achieved something but rather you will achieve your goals once you are happy!

It's a small distinction that makes all the difference.

Being happy in your own life has the effect of putting your mind, body and soul in the right state to achieve your goals. Simple!

Even if you're one of those people who read something like the above and think - 'hogwash', what have you truly got to lose by trying it?

Are you so shackled to being a miserable grump that you cannot stomach that there are alternatives?

This morning, while waiting for my coffee at one of my favorite coffee shops I was discussing with someone else waiting in line. I can't even recall the actual full conversation but one sentence in particular stood out for me. This person turned to me and with a dead-straight face said 'When you get to a certain age, you are who you are. There's no changing that.' To say I was completely floored is an understatement. Here was a person who would have been lucky to be 30 in my opinion pretty much stating that they had learned everything in life that they needed to and weren't even willing to consider any change in their lives. This, straight after they had been bitching about their job, the morning commute, the weather and their lives in general - to a total stranger!

This is the type of conditioning and environment that we all experience, each and every day!

Miserable outlook on life equals a miserable outcome.

Most of us look forward to the 'big hits of happiness' that come about in our lives. That's totally natural, however studies have shown that no matter how much money or material wealth you have, the things that make us happiest on a day-to-day basis are the small things.

From the very first moment you wake up set your foundation for the day. Today is a good day. Take some time to just be you in the morning - the emails can wait. Recall those things that you are grateful for. Relive them in your mind. Smile. Savor that coffee without thinking about a million other things, they can wait.

Once you've kicked off your day with this foundation, keep at it. Don't let the grind of what needs doing right now have any impact on your happiness. Remember that your happiness cannot be controlled by others unless you give them the power to. Another Simples!

So what does all this have to do with wealth? I'm glad I asked.

There have been numerous studies performed by reputable organizations and schools studying wealth and the creation of wealth. Without failure all of these studies showed that those who actually ended up creating the wealth that they were after, were mostly happy in their lives even before the wealth was created!

This happiness, the joy of living actually helped these individuals tackle the obstacles that came their way - the same way that you and I will experience obstacles. Their foundation of happiness and a total belief in what they were trying to achieve propelled them straight through these obstacles like they weren't even there - alternatively, they looked for ways around them.

They didn't wait to be happy until they reached a certain goal. They were happy at each and every step along the journey.

Remember, Life isn't a destination it's a journey. Enjoy, be happy and grateful for every step in the journey that takes you closer to your goals. The happier you are now, the easier the next steps are.

It's your choice, choose happiness, health and wealth or choose to be miserable and a spectator in your own life's journey.

The Jaded New Yorker and Customer Service

Have you ever walked into a store and not been greeted by an employee? I was born and raised in NYC. Walking into a store and not being greeted by an employee or not being able to find an employee to help you locate an item was the norm to me.

The lack of customer service became so routine to me that when I moved to Charlotte, I was annoyed every time I entered a store. So annoyed I would send my husband shopping so that I would not have to interact with store employees. In addition to the abundant 'welcome's' and 'may I help you with anything' the part I wished to avoid the most it checking out. While at the check-out no matter what lane or store it was the same thing, 'how are you today, ma'am?' followed by an extensive conversation about nothingness ranging from commentary about the weather to questions regarding the items I purchased or stories about their family members.

I had to evaluate where did the problem lie. Were the store employees that annoying. While a small percentage of that may be true but it could not be the case when for every store; I had to look within and discover something very surprising. It took a long time for me to realize how jaded New York City has made me. I was conditioned by the rudeness and self-centered attitude customs of a New Yorker. I needed to break this negative influence very quickly, especially if I was going to be a long-time resident of Charlotte.

I began to look at customer service from a new perspective. In conjunction with the need to change my outlook, I also needed this change if I were to become an entrepreneur who will need to provide nothing less that superior customer service. I needed to evaluate the experience of customer service from the perspective of both the provider and the recipient. What I was accustomed to, was in reality, not acceptable.

I took the time to evaluate customer service from the perspective of the customer as well as the employee. Recently, I recorded my customer service experiences over the course of this past summer. My decision to do such was two-fold; one, to strip myself of all negative notions of 'annoying customer service' and two, to establish the type of customer service I want to develop and implement within my business.

If I am walking into an establishment of which I plan to become a patron, I expect to be acknowledged and respected. I would like to feel comfortable and confident that my money is being spent in an establishment that recognizes my contribution. Greeting me upon entry is not annoy it assists in removing any apprehensions I, as the customer, may have; especially if I plan on making a significant purchase. Also, statistics have shown that consumers tend to spend more money when they feel relaxed and comfortable.

Having an employee ask a customer if assistance is needed before they have to seek help reinforces customer acknowledgement which increases the level of comfort and relaxation. Having an employee within reach at all times is beneficial to the customer because it decreases moments of anxiety or frustration when a question or concern cannot be immediately addressed. The average person level of interest is a very short span, and once a person has to seek assistance, interest is evaluated and most often lost.

It is easy to underestimate the value and significance customer service can bring. Excellent customer service can increase sales for business while subpar customer service can run a business into closing its doors permanently. It is up to the business owner to find a working balance between providing first-rate customer service without compromising the integrity of the establishment as well as the employees.

As an entrepreneur, making sure the customer is always satisfied is a tough task and contrary to popular belief the customer cannot always 'be right.' Is it fair or even moral for a business owner to ignore the significance of its employees to provide gratification to a customer, especially if the gratification requesting is undeserving? I like to adhere to the ideology that the customer is not always right, but they are deserving of making sure they receive the right level of customer service.

My observations have led me to establish a new outlook on customer service. I am no longer annoyed when I am greeted or asked if I need assistance. I do find myself offended when I encounter establishments that do not provide welcoming and helpful customer service.

Why Do Birds Of A Feather Flock Together?

As a child my grandmother used to remind me all the time that I was representative of the people around me. When I got older and worked with Jim Rohn, known as the greatest business philosopher of the 20th century, he repeated this continually. We are a sum of those we surround ourselves with!
In business this is important if we want success and an opportunity to move forward. I have found though that this can be very limiting when it comes to personal relationships.

What this old proverb is really saying is that people of the same sort of background, culture, personality type or with the same tastes and interests will usually be found together.

We gravitate to whatever is familiar and similar until we understand that opening our peripheral vision and understanding of others who have a different perspective on life, we are limiting ourselves and our beliefs from self-awareness and growth.

It is known that the saying 'birds of a feather flock together' was first identified around the mid 15th century and in all these years this has not changed. By opening ourselves up to the wider world we are limited!

We are drawn to those who we believe with approve of us and the way we do life. We look also for similar characters or common interests and rarely search for those who would disapprove of us and our way of life.

It is not only humans who do this. If we watch the bird and animal world we see this happen too. If an animal is orphaned we do sometimes see another species take of the mothering and both believe that they are one of the same in a short period of time.

When we watch a flock of birds flying it is unusual to see another species flying with them unless of course, one is alone, off course and in search of company.

In the animal and bird world it appears that it has been proved that they flock together as there is security in numbers. We as humans do tend to do the same too so finding our 'own tribe' is important for us to feel safe and secure.

This behaviour started for us as children within our families, then friends and neighbours. We moved into the schooling system and played sports, there was Church and hobbies and the list goes on and on. We continued to gravitate to the things that we enjoyed and loved and thus moved into comfortable places where we felt safe.

This is a natural state for people. Now we live in a multicultural global world where we have access to everything we want. The internet has made such a difference to how we view everything that we are now given the opportunity, if we dare, to go outside our own boundaries to grow, learn and become educated to something greater than ever before.

I wonder if you have ever considered for yourself how you fit into this. Do you find that going outside your comfort zone easy or difficult? I realise that those who are introverted find it more difficult as they do not seem to have the need to socialise as they can create their own energy from within, whereas those who are extraverts, need people around them to energise themselves.

This then bring into play another. Social media plays a big part in how people come together in today's world through likes and the developing of friendships with those who they have not met via the internet.

Our world is now global. It is easy to not necessarily know the boundaries around those we communicate with until a comment or something arises that creates a questioning of our own beliefs and thoughts. We blindly go into an online relationship with someone without question which in turn gives us the ability and opportunity to grow our own circle of influence.

I love the opportunity to look outside the box! Being able to connect with those who I would once never have had the chance to do so is enlightening and embracing. Online the judgments are limited to what we can perceive initially giving us another chance to open another unfamiliar world.

I have realized that the best step to take when trying to move forward in life is to accept that sometimes we have to let go of the life we expected to have and to start living the life we are given.

Looking back on our past is not always a bad thing.

For me, taking an honest look at my past helps me understand more of who I want to see myself become in the future. I believe if I didn't remember past experiences during my life, I would not learn what truly were my mistakes and successes. I know that most of the time, I am my own worst critic and set unrealistic expectations for my life. But now that I understand this about myself, I can work on this aspect and continue to remember not to be so hard on myself.

I have spent a considerable amount of my life picturing my future and what it looks like in my mind. My life today looks nothing like that, but I know that it is okay.
