Scientists Claim First CRISPR Editing of Human Embryos in the USA

By Richa Verma

With CRISPR technology editing the DNA code of human embryo, can we hold our breath for an absolute eradication of inherited disorders like Thalassemia and similar conditions? The answer is still unclear as there is no such publication about the claims on decoding the DNA with CRISP editing technology. As per the MIT Technology Review, the research team led by Shoukhrat Mitalipov at Oregon Health and Science University has been successful in an effort to edit the genes of human embryo using CRISPR editing technology for the first time.

Gene editing has been a controversial practice, but still we had earlier seen three such efforts involving human embryo editing in China.

You can call it genetically modified human embryos or improved embryos sans defective cells with mutations responsible for inherited diseases. Even if DNA editing is controversial, it contributes to the elimination of hereditary illnesses.

Advantages of CRISPR Editing Technology

The genetic manipulation using the CRISPR editing technology in the human embryos seems viable and an effective way to remove defects from the genes, and combat thousands of diseases. The technology uses molecular scissors to influence the performance of the gene sequencing. And as a result, it can eliminate the undesirable components from it. Hence, it paves the way for the replacement of new and improved DNA with the faulty genes.

The claim also raises hopes for families with concerns for the genetic diseases, as it is capable of preventing the further spread of the deadly disorders like malaria in the body.

There is another way for which the finding holds a true and promising possibility for our future generation as well. By editing the gene sequencing in the human embryos, we can expect the "human germline editing". This means when the editing technology will instill embryos of offspring with new mutated cells, the characteristics and features of the edited DNAs will be carried through offspring after offspring. So, the germline gets fixed permanently in each successive generation and follows a hereditary pattern of a family.

With the new CRISPR editing technology, we have no more editing errors known as "mosaicism" as was the case with earlier Chinese experiments. And the desired improvement technique is thought to be followed not only by some, but all the cells in the embryo.

Contradictory Opinion about The Claims

Some critics argue that we absolutely do not need such technology to detect deformities in human embryos and correct them with CRISPR editing technology. That's because the efficacy of the technology is deemed unfit as it is unable to perform as expected if two copies of defective genes are present in the embryos.

On the other hand, we already have preimplantation diagnosis technology or OPD to detect disease causing cells in the embryos. And by using this technique, the faulty genes can be replaced through in vitro fertilization.

Disadvantages

The techniques seem to violate the rule of natures as it advocates for the creation of the designer babies. Rather than editing the disease causing genes, the technique is more likely to foster the enhancement techniques, meaning future parents would seek editing techniques to remove imperfections in their children. And we fear that this approach would lead to a genetic discrimination.

However, if the claims are true, we can free ourselves from a range of diseases, including anemia, Huntington's disease and other genetic diseases through gene modifications. So, let's keep our fingers crossed for a true future possibility.

Study Reveals How to Reprogram Cells in Our Immune System

By Richa Verma

Our immune system is calibrated to provide us with specific protection shields against harmful diseases, and other conditions too. On being influenced by the excessive active cells and intruder cells, interfering with its physical functions, our immune system is more likely to lose its strength to fight diseases, and as a result it causes a range of autoimmune diseases or different types of leukemia.

Immune cells mostly referred to as T cells can reverse the effects of these defective cells and reinstate the balance through a reprogram technique. With a reprogram technique manipulating the performances of certain immune cells, we can remain unaffected to the prevalence of different diseases, including cancers and psoriasis. This also fosters the development of new treatment options.

This is how the scientists at the Gladstone Institute have expressed about their latest findings. A renowned journal Nature has published about this metabolic mechanism in an elaborate way.

How Much Effective Is the Whole Method Of Reprogramming T Cells?

The whole method of manipulating T cells or immune cells, advocates for the reduction of anti-inflammatory reactions, developed in the immune system through pro-inflammatory genes. So, the inflammation causing factors in the immune system could be curtailed using this modification theory.

On the basis of the findings, there are two types of cells termed as Effector T cells and Regulatory T cells. These two cells play a key role in regulating our whole immune system. The Effector T cells build a shield against the pathogens so as to protect us from the vulnerability to infections, once the immune system gets charged up. The Regulatory T cells on the other hand, restrict further attacks of the pathogens to the healthy parts of our body.

With Regulatory T cells being converted into Effector T cells under the influence of reprogramming technique, a molecule drug appears to be a great precursor in the whole process. So, this method seems to be effective in converting one cell into another cell type.

The conversion methods show promise to find the etiology of the disease, especially auto-immune diseases, making it possible to eradicate the diseases from its root. Say, when effector T cells are charged up excessively in the body in the presence of autoimmune disease, the T cells expose the body to harmful effects. But by converting these Regulatory T cells, the balance of the immune system can be reinstated, followed by the reduction of hyperactivity.

Treatment for Immune-Oncology

Another way, the study is intensifying our hopes against the deadly effects of cancers and tumor related disorders. We can achieve a better outcome for immune-oncology and cancer treatments. The process is ineffective in influencing the cancer cells though; it defies its attacks on the activation of the immune system.

Since cancer cells seem to be stronger to influence Regulatory T cells, they make a room in the immune system for the growth, and hence, the detection becomes quite tough. But, the findings could help us in detecting cancerous cells and destroying them by strengthening the immune system through a conversion of Effector T cells from Regulatory T cells.

More Scopes for Stem Cell Therapies

It also brings a revolutionary milestone for stem cell therapies. With the development of Regulatory T cells, we could reverse the effects of graft-versus-host-disease, and also make our body adjust to the newly-transplanted cells.

With a reprogram technology for immune system, we could defend ourselves from a range of diseases, once which were termed as unavoidable medical cases. Hence, we can live our dream to make a disease-free world in the future.

How to Make 200k By Staying Healthy

By Chris Bouchard

Staying healthy seems like a punishment to many until it is accompanied by the opportunity to earn you 200k.

Given that both cost savings and staying healthy are desirable but challenging aspects with an impact on your financial wellbeing, several approaches can be employed to ensure that both are achieved seamlessly without discarding the other.

Here are some of the approaches to staying healthy and earn 200k in cost savings and as extra income from various incentivized wellness programs.

Insurance discount

Insurance premiums are periodically deducted in your income to facilitate payment of medical bills in case you fall ill. Some insurance providers encourage healthy living among their clients so as to reduce the cost of claims. Customers who stay healthy benefit from discounts on premium payable or cashback refunds. Some insurance providers give up to 15% as a refund to customers who exhibit healthy living in their activities and medical records.

Paid wellness challenges

Several wellness challenge applications that encourages healthy living by incentivising the entire process using financial rewards exist on the market. Subscribers commit to a programme and set a goal which upon being met will be paid with cash and cash equivalents. However, if the subscriber fails to meet the target, for example losing 500 calories in a week, the application deducts an agreed amount from their committed funds. This approach provides both positive and negative motivation aimed at encouraging healthy living.

Alternative workout

The average gym membership cost is approximated at $58 a month, exclusive of the extra charges such as the registration/initiation fee and other fringe costs. It translates to roughly as high as $1000 a year depending on the location. Earn this $1000 by using alternative workout regimes with equipment that are freely available in your house or engage in outdoor activities and freely access public facilities.

Cycling to work

The average commuting cost and time in America is $10 and 25 minutes respectively. This translates to an annual cost of $2600. Cycling to work not only eliminates this cost but it also provides you with an ample 50 minute mental and physical workout to and from work.

Go veggie

You can save up to $25 a week or $1200 annually by omitting meat and meat products in your meals. Increased intake of vegetables not only helps you to stay healthy but stopping meat consumption also boost the 'health' of your wallet through cost savings.

Befriend technology

Wearable gadgets and smart watches have inbuilt healthy living applications that tracks physical activities such as walking, the heart rate, calories burned or added, etc. This data can be synchronized to other stakeholders such as retail stores and businesses that encourage healthy living, and the user earns points that are converted into cash discount redeemable at the store.

It pays, literally, when you stay active and healthy, and within 1-2 years of staying healthy you can make up to 200k. Staying healthy and being physical active saves you money in the in the long run (pun intended).

Healthy Living - Three Reasons Why You Should Focus On Hydration

By Beverleigh H Piepers

Looking to boost your hydration? If not, it is time to rethink that. Nearly everyone needs to get more fluids into their day, and this fluid should come primarily from water. Often people eat when they are just thirsty. Drinking sufficient amounts of fluid helps to prevent this kind of overeating and has many other benefits as well. Fluid fills the stomach for a short time, and it gives you something to digest that does not necessarily contain calories.

So many of us are walking around in a chronically dehydrated state, and this can be the cause of many health problems. There are several reasons why you need to get your water intake up, but let us look at three of the most important ones right now...

1. It Improves Physical Performance. Want to go that extra mile in the gym? Try drinking more water. As little as 1% dehydration can have negative impacts on your strength output, so it pays to get your fluids in.

Many people know it is essential to drink water after a workout session since you have been sweating, but what they forget is it is as important to go into their workout well hydrated.

Drink water before you hit the gym for better results.

2. It may Help Reduce Cancer. Cancer is one of the most devastating diseases, and yet, it can be prevented to some degree. Eating the right foods and drinking enough water is essential.

Dehydration can be linked to an increased risk of developing colon or bladder cancer, so if those run in your family, you will want to put as much focus as you can on meeting your 8 to 10 glasses of water a day quota. If your urine is a pale yellow color, this is a sign you are well hydrated.

3. It Can Enhance Your Energy Level. Finally, the last reason to drink more water is it can help to boost your overall energy level as well. Those who are in a state of dehydration will notice decrements in their endurance as well as their whole day energy level.

If you feel fatigued and do not feel like doing much of anything, try drinking more water. It may help you remedy the situation.

This list is by no means exhaustive. There are many other reasons to increase your water intake so do your best to increase the number of glasses you drink each day. Carry a water bottle with you wherever you go, and you will find it is easier than you may think.

Although managing your disease can be very challenging, Type 2 diabetes is not a condition you must just live with. You can make simple changes to your daily routine and lower both your weight and your blood sugar levels. Hang in there, the longer you do it, the easier it gets.

Tips to Staying Protected From the Sun During Summer and Spring

By Ravi Patel

Finally, the winter is over. The sun is shining, and its fun playing under the sun. Staying outdoor to enjoy fresh air and produce some vitamin D can be very lovely during summer. As lovely as staying outdoor is, it can be very dangerous to the skin. Every second spent under the sun damages the skin, leading to wrinkles, weathered appearance and aging of the skin. To maintain a younger-looking skin, you need to be very careful when staying outdoor during summer and spring.

Tip 1 - Eat Fruits and Vegetables

Research has shown that some phytonutrients which are known as carotenoids which impart the beautiful, rich and attractive yellow and gold color to vegetables and fruits effectively help in increasing the natural resistance of the skin to UV damages. When you eat fruits and vegetables a lot, you get enough carotenoids. Aside from increasing the natural resistance of the skin to UV damages, the carotenoids also add a golden hue to the skin thus making the skin more attractive, healthier and nicely tanned.

Tip 2 - Practice Safe Sun Habits

There is nothing as lovely as sitting on the sand and enjoying the cold breeze from the ocean during a sunny day. As lovely as staying outdoor during summer is, one should avoid staying outdoor during the sun peak hours which is from 10 am till 4 pm. However, if you have to stay outdoors during the sun peak hours, it is very important to seek shades. When the sun is shining heavily, it is wise to find shelter under a big tree. Carrying an umbrella during summer is also a very smart move.

Tip 3 - Apply sunscreen

One of the best ways to protect the skin from sun damage is to use sunscreen. The best and number one choice for maximum protection is broad-spectrum sunscreens. It is not sufficient to just use any sunscreen, a broad-spectrum sunscreen that offers adequate protection from both UVA and UVB rays such as Aveeno Active Naturals,    [https://mybeautybazaar.com/collections/sun-care-tanning/products/aveeno-active-naturals-protect-hydrate-lotion-spf-50-3-oz]Protect + Hydrate Lotion, SPF 50 should be used. This water-resistant sunscreen fights the signs of aging, helps reduce irritation, and provides broad-spectrum SPF 50 protection. To facilitate good coverage, the sunscreen should be applied first and leave for about 30 minutes to ensure its absorption before the application of protective makeups.

Tip 4 - Wear Clothes That Covers the Skin

Also, it's crucial to cover up during summer. Wear loose-fitting, long-sleeve and dark-colored clothes to protect your skin from the aging effect of the sun. Yes, it's not comfortable wearing flowing robes at all times but the more you cover your skin, the younger your skin looks. The sun rays can penetrate through clothing, thus it is advisable to choose thick, dark-colored clothing over thin, light-colored clothing. Wearing of hat protects the face and neck from the sun. It's advisable to go for thicker and tighter weave hats with dark colors.

Tip 5 - Wear Sunglasses

The eyes are very sensitive to UV rays. Both UVA and UVB rays are harmful to the eyes. It is highly recommended to wear sunglasses that have 100% UVA and UVB protection. This helps in avoiding cataracts and bad vision.

Eating Disorders: What Are The Signs You Could Be Suffering?

By Arthur Wilson

Eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia are becoming increasingly common. They mostly affect teenage girls and young women, but men and older women can also suffer from an eating disorder. Anyone with this medical/psychological condition needs to be treated as early as possible to prevent serious health complications. Early detection and treatment can literally save lives.

There are certain signs and symptoms that can indicate if a person has an eating disorder. The most common ones are listed below. If you notice these in yourself, or in someone you know, there is a chance that you or that person may need professional help. Talk to your parents, a health counselor, or an adult you trust to help you get properly assessed and diagnosed, and if needed, treated.

Physical signs and symptoms

Noticeable weight loss (for people suffering from anorexia nervosa)

Weight fluctuations (for people with bulimia nervosa). The weight can move up and down, or it can be within the normal range.

Intolerance to cold. The person feels cold easily.

Frequent experience of abdominal pain, constipation, acid reflux and other digestive issues

Feeling dizzy and sometimes fainting

Either lethargy or excess energy, or alternating experiences of these two opposite states

Irregularities in the menstrual period

Dental issues (such as cavities, tooth discoloration and tooth sensitivity)

Dry skin, nails and hair. The person may also have thinning hair and brittle nails.

Poor wound healing and immune function. She gets the flu and common infections easily.

Swollen salivary glands (along the neck and jaw areas)

Behavioral signs

Dressing in layers or loose clothing to disguise weight loss (and also to stay warm)

A preoccupation with weight loss and dieting. The person is very concerned about food choices and nutritional data (calories, fat content, etc.). She can refuse to eat certain types of food altogether, such as carbs or fats.

Frequently commenting that she is fat or overweight, even though it is evidently not true

Frequently saying that she is not hungry, including during meal times when she should be hungry

Skipping meals or eating very little during meals

Occasionally binge-eating (eating a large amount of food in a short period of time)

Purging. This is done by going to the bathroom during or after meals, vomiting, or using laxatives and diuretics.

Unusual food rituals, such as chewing excessively, not allowing different food items on her plate to touch, and eating only certain food types (for example, vegetables and salads only)

Excessive drinking of water or non-caloric drinks

Hoarding of food in unusual places

Excessive working out

Frequently looking in the mirror to check her appearance

Difficulty sleeping or getting a good night's sleep

Emotional signs and symptoms

Fears eating in public, or feels uncomfortable while eating with others

Prefers to be alone, and withdraws from friends and social events

Has extreme mood swings

Has an intense and unreasonable fear of gaining weight

Has a distorted image of her body

May have poor self-esteem

The presence of these signs and symptoms does not indicate with absolute certainty that the person does have an eating disorder. Only a professional medical practitioner can properly diagnose the condition, so it's best to see one as soon as possible.

If you're suffering from an eating disorder, you should seek medical help. If you're looking to change your lifestyle with a healthier attitude towards food, visit http://step1recovery.com/ for more information.

Baby Boomers: Turn Back the Clock on Your Heart 20 Years With Exercise

By Julie Gorges

I'm loving this latest report. According to a new study, even if you've been pretty much a couch potato for most your life, it's not too late. You can still get in shape now in late middle-age and help your heart function as if it were 20 years younger.

The study published in the American Heart Association's journal, Circulation, looked at healthy but sedentary people between the ages of 45 and 64.

Individuals were put into two different groups. The first group participated in a program of non-aerobic exercise such as yoga, balance training, and weight training three times a week. The second group, did moderate- to high-intensity aerobic exercise for four or more days a week.

After two years, the group engaging in the higher-intensity exercise saw a dramatic improvement in the function of their hearts.

"We took these 50-year-old hearts and turned the clock back to 30- or 35-year-old hearts," said Dr. Ben Levine, a sports cardiologist at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and director of the Institute for Exercise and Environmental Medicine at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital. "Their hearts processed oxygen more efficiently and were notably less stiff."

Sorry, but walking the dog around the block a couple days a week doesn't seem to do the trick. Of course, any kind of exercise is better than nothing at all, but if you want to turn the clock back on your heart, a bit more is needed. A key part of the effective exercise regimen was interval training - short bursts of high-intensity exercise followed by a few minutes of recovery.

The researchers eased the exercise group into its routine with three, 30-minute, moderate exercise sessions a week for the first three months and built up to a regular set of workouts that peaked at 10 months and included:

*Two days of high-intensity intervals: four minutes at 95 percent of a person's maximum ability (for example, running at a brisk pace or pedaling fast against resistance), followed by three minutes of active recovery (jogging slower, walking briskly, or pedaling slower), repeated four times.

*One day of an hour-long moderate-intensity exercise that raised the heart rate and the participant enjoyed like dancing, tennis, swimming, cycling, or a brisk walk.

*One or two days of 30-minute sessions of moderate-intensity exercise, meaning the participant would break a sweat, be a little short of breath, but still be able to carry on a conversation.

*One or two weekly strength training sessions using weights or exercise machines either on a separate day or after an exercise session.

The participants were encouraged to use diversification with lots of different exercise equipment (stationary bikes, treadmills, elliptical trainers) and engage in outdoor exercises (jogging and cycling) to keep themselves motivated and interested, Levine said.

The intense workout was important, Levine emphasized, even if it was just once a week. Pushing as hard as you can for four minutes stresses the heart, he explained, and forces it to function more efficiently. Repeating the intervals helps strengthen both the heart and the circulatory system.

Another benefit? "It breaks up the monotony of just the walking," he said. "Most people really enjoy the high intensity work. You would think that they wouldn't but they like the fact that it's short and they like the fact that they feel stronger afterwards."

The participants tracked their heart rate, which is ideal. But as an alternative, use the simple talk test. During the high-intensity intervals, you should be working hard enough and breathing heavy enough that you can't talk comfortably in long sentences.

Don't wait too long, Levine warned. "The sweet spot in life to get off the couch and start exercising is in late middle-age when the heart still has plasticity," Levine said. You may not be able to reverse the aging of your heart if you wait until after 70 to begin.

But you'll still see benefits from exercising. A research team at Tufts University found that frail people as old as 89 could tolerate an exercise regime that included walking, leg lifts, and stretching. The participants may not have turned back the clock on their hearts, but they improved in ways that could make a big difference. Exercising helped them maintain their mobility and decreased their chances of becoming physically disabled.

"You are never too old, or never too weak, or never too impaired [to benefit from a physical activity program]," said Roger Fielding of Tufts, who led the study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Of course, before starting any strenuous exercise program, be sure and check with your doctor. Then get off that couch and start moving!

At The Edge Of The Detachment - From a Reiki Energy Healing Session

By Zahra'a Sharif

When I started learning about energy healing, especially Reiki, I was expecting miracles to happen in the physical level to people who I conduct healing for. I wanted that to happen as I witnessed the suffering of many loved ones and had the eagerness to render assistance.

I know that the healing procedure failed on so many occasions to diagnose and heal. However, the side effects of pills to our body system cannot be sidelined as well as the physical and emotional pain after a surgical procedure.

I saw many people who had mental issues and were taking pills to calm them down so they don't become dangerous to themselves or others, but it rarely helps to put them on track again.

I read so many books on the idea that the body can heal itself, and that the mind has the power to create miracles but I never witnessed one. I was hoping that Reiki can be the creator of these miracles that initiate self-healing of the body.

My journey to learn about energy healing started from the moment I felt that my purpose should be about helping people who are suffering. So, it was a journey in searching for something to help.

After performing many Reiki sessions on one of my relatives and had no good results, I inquired from my teacher to know more about the expectations from Reiki sessions but his answer was that when you do a session, the energy definitely channels to the body and locate the areas where healing is needed. You may do it to heal an issue whereas it healed another issue or produce result never attached to the expectations.

Today, after many years of channeling the universal energy, Reiki to myself and many clients, I witnessed so many miracles, most of them on myself.

It is important to know that Reiki energy goes to the part of the body that need healing, on both physical and mental level. But the client should allow it, subconsciously. In another word, if the receiver of the energy keeps on fighting with their own thought and telling themselves that the Reiki is not helping, then definitely it won't help. But if they surrender themselves to the energy allowing and realising that it will definitely do the change that it meant to do for that session then the result will be more than the expectations.

Reiki always surprise me with how effective and powerful it is. Just allow it and witness the results.

A Vaser Lipo Procedure Can Help Remove Unwanted Fat From Your Double Chin

By Mags Whyler

Having a double chin doesn't necessarily have to mean you're overweight. Genetics, water retention or bad eating habits mean that slim women, are just as susceptible to getting a double chin as anyone else. Double chins and sagging jowls can affect anyone, and can prove difficult to get rid of regardless of your body type, shape and size.

It's very hard to hide fat under the chin and around the neck unless you keep your head held high all the time, trying to make your profile more flattering. And concealing it with clothing is only possible if you want to spend the rest of your life with a scarf wrapped around your neck.

A double chin can also slowly appear because of lack of exercise. When you put on weight, the fat can settle under your chin, changing the contour of your face and altering your appearance. Unfortunately it's not possible to spot reduce just your chin, so you will need a full-body weight-loss approach, and focus on reducing all of your body fat to lose your double chin. However, there are no certainties that if you put on weight you'll gain a double chin or that if you lose weight, your double chin will go.

When there's a stored layer of fat directly underneath the chin, it can really affect the self-confidence for a lot of adults. Although it's a condition that's unlikely to affect younger people, unless they are overweight, they might be prone to suffer from a double chin if their family has a hereditary predisposition to them, or they might naturally retain too much water in the chin area, or their body just might naturally store excess fat.

Vaser liposuction is specially tailored to work well, even on small areas of fat, and is often considered a good choice for delicate areas such as the chin because it's able to target specific fat, without damaging the surrounding nerves.

The vaser lipo procedure starts with a saline solution injected into the chin, which will numb the area making it a painless process. Following the injection, small incisions are then made in the chin, and a small ultrasonic probe gets inserted, and this probe gives off high frequency energy to loosen the fat cells and smooth them, and the fat can then be removed from the chin using a gentle suction technique.

As the chin is such a small area, the procedure should only take about 30 minutes. Recovery time is also short, although you will need to wear a compression garment on your chin for a short period.

If you need help choosing a cosmetic procedure, we provide an extensive range of cosmetic procedures for the face and body: Botox, Vaser Lipo, Lip Augmentation, Dermal Fillers and many more treatments, to help create a younger, slimmer, more youthful looking you!

The Selston Cosmetic Clinic is located in Selston, Nottingham, where we offer a bespoke service with a personalised touch and deliver high client satisfaction. We have been involved in the cosmetic industry for over 10 years

Type 2 Diabetes and Exercise - Intensifying Your Workouts

By Beverleigh H Piepers

If you wish to enjoy the known benefits of exercise including better blood sugar control and the loss of weight, what you are aiming for is a healthy level of fitness. The hardest part about physical activity is maintaining consistency. It is easy to get yourself to workout now and then but keeping up a routine is a noticeable step up in difficulty.

If you have done well in this regard, give yourself some credit. What you have achieved is not an easy feat. Now you are active; you may be wondering about the next step. It is likely time to intensify your workouts.

Are you ready for this challenge?

Why intensify your workouts? First, let us briefly talk about why you should be ramping up your intensity because you may still not be sold on the idea. To increase the power does not mean you have to...

aspire to sprint on a track,

run a race, or take

your rowing exercise from the gym to the outdoors.

All it means is you should work a little bit harder. So, increase your tempo, and challenge yourself a bit more.

The benefits are numerous. Increased fitness is first on the list because the best way to stimulate change in this area is to shock your body with something unexpected - within means, of course. Increasing your intensity is the best and healthiest way to do this.

run a race, or take

your rowing exercise from the gym to the outdoors.

Sharing Problems, Seeking Guidance Make It Easier to Deal With Dual Diagnosis

By Barbara Odozi

Dual diagnosis is one of the most complex brain disorders. Usually a combination of psychiatric illness and substance use disorder (SUD), it is comparatively severer and more complex than either of the two disorders as it involves the interplay between two equally complex conditions. Dual diagnosis, known as co-occurring disorders in the common parlance, is characterized by errant behavior, petty criminal offenses, and fluctuating moods due to the comorbidity of SUD and mental disorder.

Depending on the kind of substance abused, users develop different combinations of coexisting disorders, such as alcoholism and depression. The repercussions of dual diagnosis are not restrained only to the individual grappling with the challenges of the disorder but equally impacts family members and friends as well.

The family of the person suffering from dual diagnosis finds itself struggling with a new challenge every now and then. These problems can include arranging a ride to the hospital in odd hours, finding funds for treatment, and dealing with his or her exaggerated and irrational hallucinations or paranoia. This could be cumbersome for the members of the family, leaving no time for recreation and rejuvenation. Most are harried and hassled, and heave a sigh of relief when it is time to send the patient to a recovery home for treatment.

Though they may not show it explicitly, family members could feel resentment and hatred toward their condition due to the patient. Despite all efforts, there is an increased risk that things could turn for worse, spiking the likelihood of a relapse. They feel let down by the patient, when he or she expresses no gratitude for their all help and care.

Ways to handle dual diagnosis patients in family

The risk of exacerbating the problem runs high when family and friends use violence and intimidation to control the patient. In order to nip the problem in the bud, the family should instead try the following tips:

Keeping control over spending: Instead of giving money to a dual diagnosis patient, which could fuel addiction, the family should appoint a caregiver to take care of his/her expenses. It is necessary to keep money away from the reach of such patients. Furthermore, with the help of a community mental health worker, counsellor or therapist, a person can be dissuaded from splurging money on drugs and alcohol.

Dealing with agitation and paranoia: The families of people living with the co-occurring disorders must learn to deal with the most common symptoms of dual diagnosis, such as agitation, paranoia and hallucinations. In certain conditions, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, the signs of an impending flare up are evident prior to the actual episode. Therefore, it is vital for the family to develop mechanisms for dealing with such episodes, such as providing medications or taking help of a community organization or health care center. In case, there are children in the family, it is necessary to keep them out of harm's way. Such psychotic episodes can have a deeper impression on the mind of a child compared to adults.

Staying firm: Although people with dual diagnosis have as much right to decide their lifestyle and way of living as any other person, it is necessary for their families to stay firm and communicate clearly in case their habits are negatively impacting the members, especially children.

Taking professional help when required: One should not shy away from taking professional help, not just for the patient but also for himself or herself, if needed. Participating in community awareness and skill training programs related to dual diagnosis keep one abreast of the latest developments. Also, one can develop better coping mechanisms and feel more stressed out by meeting other families living with the same set of problems through such community programs. These community programs related to harm minimization strategies help people in keeping the patient and the family safe.

Progressive family members support each other

Dual diagnosis is a complex problem that requires treatment by a clinical expert in addition to the love and support of the family. In certain instances, when the condition is beyond control, the person suffering from dual diagnosis would be required to prolong his/her stay in inpatient settings.

If you know someone suffering from addiction and a co-occurring mental disorder, contact the Dual Diagnosis Helpline 855-981-6047 for information on appropriate rehab centers near you. Call at our 24/7 helpline for drug detox programs to access the finest dual diagnosis program.

10 Reasons Causing You Depression and What to Do

By Faruk Shonubi

You are Neurotic

In simpler terms, you are a worrier. In a gathering, you are most likely to be by yourself, lost in your own thoughts, thinking of what you could have said or done last year, to change your whole situation. You worry about the past, now and future. You probably look at others and try to figure out how they still manage to smile. You want to stop thinking, but just don't know how to. When you worry constantly, you continue to complicate issues, and still have no solution. Then it becomes an addiction, next thing you know, you begin to question people's thoughts, their responses and then you being to question your own sanity. You must have heard the saying "worry is useless," although, it is not entirely useless, as it can be okay to worry over issues. It shows that you are a considerate individual, and are willing to proffer solutions. But have to learn to let go and relax sometimes. Obsessively worrying can lead to depression.

You are a Perfectionist

You see that one crinkle in your cloth while ironing and it irks you so much, till you straighten it out. That one stain on the plate just ticks you off so much you can't ignore it. You immediately fall out of place if something doesn't go as planned. You are probably a (DIY) do it yourself kind of person, your touch makes it perfect. You love order so much, that, a second of chaos can leave you distressed. You can sometimes be too hard on yourself, even over trivial matters. While it can be of good advantage to be pedantic, it can lead to a lot of disappointments, because you continue to raise your expectations of things from people, food, environment and your lifestyle.

Pessimistic

Negative patterns of thinking, most times is behind most people's depression. You find it hard to be optimistic. Immediately a target is set, you instantly think about a million ways it can go wrong. May be you have a good idea, and just as it pops up, you immediately start to think, 'no one would buy this,' 'it is not good enough.' Can you see link? You are neurotic, perfectionist and maybe pessimistic? Life is riddled with uncertainty and approaching life with such mind frame is not only damaging to the psyche but overall well being. You have to learn to change your line of thought. You can start by reaffirming yourself of how much you need to be positive immediately a negative thought crops up. Try meditating, take time to be alone and try to calm your racing thoughts.

Stressed

You may be under pressure from work, school or from trying to match up with expectations from friends and family. Maybe you are finding it hard juggling work, social and family life. The pressure from all of that can leave one feeling lethargic and dispirited. Here is what you can do. Form a routine and make a habit of following whatever routine you set for yourself. As humans we perform optimally when we set a target of what to do, you can go as far as setting a target for even the next minute and make sure to see it through. Managing stressors properly can prevent a lot of mental chatter.

Irresolute

When it comes to making and taking decisions, you are always pussyfooting. You may be afraid or myopic towards taking that bold step. Every minute of our lives requires that we take action, from waking, bathing, doing chores, up till the stage where we make important live decisions. Being indecisive would make you procrastinate a lot, and that could live you feeling unfulfilled. This could make it harder to get that monkey of your back.

Impatient

Our minds works in ways that wish everything happens in a flick. We can be too eager over situations at times that, when it takes longer than usual to materialize, it breaks us down. You have to first understand that everything follows a process. You didn't start speaking in a day. It took you several years to become an adult. Everything happens in stages. Snap out of the illusion that things ought to happen as quickly as you want. The universe doesn't follow your will, and you have no power over how events turn out, you only have control over how it affects you. It is said that good things takes time. Being patient helps you cope with uncertainty better.

Highly sensitive

Are you the kind that is easily offended, feel emotions deeply, feel uncomfortable in large crowds, and quick to assume they are being judged? Then you may be highly sensitive. For highly sensitive persons, handling depression is more delicate, especially with someone who has suffered a trauma. Repressed thoughts of the trauma could bring about grief for the individual. Know that it is okay to let it out, grieving is expected, it lets you heal. Also ensure that you get to the root of the trauma, know what is causing your pain. It is as simple as asking 'why am I sad?' or 'how did I get here?' Else, you would continuously grieve and forget to heal.

Desires

Sometimes, it's the picture of how perfect it should be, where we should be, that causes us pain. As humans, we are target driven and fill satisfied only when our long held dreams are accomplished. But sometimes, we have and hold very unrealistic expectations and make ourselves gloomy. For example, wanting to own the latest Lamborghini Murcilago, and your income cannot even afford a scooter. Then you begin sulking over your inability to buy the Lamborghini. You want to cut your coat according to your size and stop longing for things beyond your reach. Just try to appreciate the little things, and remain content with what you have.

Non-Spiritual

You may not be spiritually inclined, given that you are tired of waiting to be rescued by a deity in that dire period of hurt. But a belief in a supreme being can be the saving grace in this kind of period. Each individual operates on different belief systems. I daresay we are nothing without some form of belief. Some find succour in believing a supreme being in times of need, and psychologically it has been proven to be a very useful coping mechanism in dealing with depression. Reconnect with your spiritual side, spark that fire, pray and be animated again.

Cherophobic

Overtime you may have conditioned yourself to be averse to things that make you happy. This could be as a result of not wanting to face rejection or disappointment again. So you have adapted well to that murky lifestyle and accepted the dismal state as the status quo. Therefore, you don't expect anything to cheer you up. As a matter of fact, you are petrified of being happy. Make conscious effort to change your pattern of thinking. If possible change the environment you live in and the activities that you do. Also try as much as possible to reminisce the good times and reflect on it, remember you weren't always like this. This will help adjust that unhealthy mind frame and help imbibe positive thoughts.

It is also advisable to seek medical help while dealing with depression. You may consider seeing a psychologist and attend therapy sessions. Cognitive behavioral therapy CBT also is a good treatment for depression. Never feel ashamed to seek help. You deserve all the happiness in the world.

How to Relieve Your Pain With Yoga

By Ann Clinton

Who would have thought a few simple poses would alleviate headaches, back pain and other pains that many people suffer through? I was totally blown away when I learned that practicing yoga would get rid of my headaches. Had I known this many years ago, I never would have suffered body-dropping headaches as a teen. Here are a few simple moves to rid your pain for the New Year.

Headaches, Stress, and Anxiety
Are headaches, stress, and anxiety menaces to your daily activities? Try coming into a kneeling position, sitting on your legs, on the floor. Inhale deeply and exhale, leaning forward to rest your forehead on the floor for five or ten breaths. Your arms are resting limply at your sides. Continue to breathe deeply, imagining that you are exhaling your breath directly into the troubled area. When you are ready to come out of this pose, inhale deeply and slowly raise your head from the floor.

Back Pain?
Try lying on your back, on the floor. Inhale deeply and as you exhale, hug your knees to your chest. Hold this position for five to ten breaths as you rock from side to side to massage your lower back against the floor. To come out of the pose, on an exhale, release your legs to the floor and lie flat on your back, breathing smoothly for another five to ten breaths before turning to your right side to rise slowly to a comfortable sitting position. Try this as many times as you need to throughout the day.

Another excellent pose for back pain is lying prostrate on the floor (at full length). Begin inhaling and exhaling deeply. On an inhale, raise your arms and legs to your own degree and hold for a breath or two. Then release and let them down on an exhale. Try this as many times as you like. To come out, inhale to your hands and knees.

Hip Pain?
Feeling stiffness in your hip-joint whenever you rise from sitting to walk? Try this easy pose and feel the pain disappear. Sit on the floor with your legs crossed (crisscross applesauce). Sit tall, inhaling deeply and then exhale as you walk your hands out in front of you (to your own degree). Continue to breathe deeply for five to ten breaths. When you're ready to come out of this pose, inhale as you walk your hands back into your body and rise slowly from the floor.

Practice these poses as often as you can and discover the new calm, and pain-free you for the New Year.

Causes and Treatment of Iron-Deficiency Anemia

By Anand Kumar

Anemia is a body condition characterized by low-level of hemoglobin in the red blood cells. Iron-deficiency anemia occurs when your body does not have enough iron and since iron is responsible for producing hemoglobin, the rest of your body will not be able to get the required oxygen for daily activities.

There are many signs to suggests that you have an iron-deficiency anemia; shortness of breath, general fatigue, pale skin, dizziness, cold hands and feet, headaches, tingling feeling in the legs, just to mention a few. Many people may not be aware of this condition until they actually go for a medical test.

Causes

If you consume too little iron over a long period of time, it may lead to a deficiency in your body. Menstruating and pregnant women are also at a high risk of shortage due to blood loss during menstruation and childbirth. Internal bleeding caused by stomach ulcer, polyps in colon or intestines, regular intake of pain relievers like aspirin, can also put you at risk. Some disorders or surgeries that affect the intestines can be a source of interference with the ability of your body to absorb iron.

Treatment

There are many treatment options available for iron-deficiency anemia. You can take iron supplements and if possible, you can take them on an empty stomach so that they can be easily absorbed by the body. There may also be need for you to take them for a long period of time depending on your level of deficiency.

Furthermore, you should ensure that your diet is rich in iron. Foods like red meat, nuts, dark green leafy vegetables, cereals, dried fruits, etc., can be of great help. You should also take citrus fruits because they are rich in vitamin C which helps your body to absorb iron. If excessive bleeding is the cause of the deficiency, you will need to consult a competent medical practitioner in order to help you stop the bleeding. Blood transfusion is also an option if there is an urgent need to boost the iron level.

Prevention

You can prevent iron-deficiency anemia by eating foods rich in iron and vitamin C. Mothers should give breast milk to their children and, if possible, infant formula fortified with iron. Foods rich in iron include meat, like pork, chicken, lamb and beef, beans, pumpkin and squash seeds, eggs, seafood, such as clams, sardines, shrimp and oysters, iron-fortified dry and instant cereals, leafy greens, such as spinach raisins and other dried fruit.

How You Can Prevent Vitamin D Deficiency

By Anand Kumar

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin which is produced when your skin is exposed to the sun. It can also be found in some foods and it is notorious for helping the body to absorb calcium from foods in order to maintain healthy bone cells. It also sustains muscle health, boosts cell growth, curtail inflammation, enhances immune system and regulates blood pressure.

Vitamin D deficiency is caused when your serum vitamin D level is below 20 nanograms/millimeter (ng/ml). It can also occur when there is an insufficiency of the vitamin in your diet or your body cannot absorb and metabolize the ones you consume.

Furthermore, if you live in a place with a high latitude, you may be at more risk of vitamin D deficiency because you may have less access to the sun's ultraviolet-B (UVB) rays. Staying too much indoors is also a contributing factor and if you live in a highly-polluted territory, you may have a lesser access to sun's rays. The use of excessive sunscreen on your skin to block UV rays may also be a contributory factor while those with darker skin types need more exposure.

It is unsafe to self-diagnose a vitamin D deficiency because its symptoms are similar to many other ailments. Hence, it is very important to conduct a laboratory test in order to establish the ailment. However, some symptoms that may be noticed are weak bones, depression, chronic pain, rising blood pressure, exhaustion even with adequate sleep, unexplained infertility, weakness of the muscle, just to mention a few.

Boosting your vitamin D levels is as easy as ABC. You can take over-the-counter supplements or multivatimin preparations, while the consumption of foods like salmon, tuna, cheese, liver, egg yolk, milk, cereals, etc., is advisable. It is very important to expose your skin to sunlight and if you have a history of skin cancer or you have a very pale skin, you should speak with a medical professional to know whether you are fit for sun exposure.

Moreover, you should consider maintaining a healthy body weight and get involved in an outdoor exercise every day. Those with liver, kidney or gut problems should monitor their medical condition properly and get the necessary treatment. Infants who are being breast-fed may not get enough vitamin D since they may not be exposed to sunlight, hence, they can be given supplements in order to make up for this.

Science or Arts?

By Awele Danielle Asianah

In my third year in junior school, just like my fellow Nigerian school mates, stereotypes made me believe that I had to be a science student to be considered a person who would most likely be successful in the future. A science student offers the core science subjects, therefore such a person would most likely be an engineer or medical doctor. Those two professions are also considered the only good ones in Nigeria. So, I had to tell myself that I would be a doctor. I mean that was what my father loved to hear.

Now, I had moved onto the next stage, first year in senior school as a science student. My new best friends became my physics, biology and chemistry textbooks. It was no longer a joke seeing as one's high school grades make up the most important part of your transcript for university admissions. Lo and behold, I found myself forcefully studying hard to get good grades in these subjects yet I had lost interest in the sciences. At this point, I asked myself several times if I actually wanted to study medicine or it was just the stereotypes serving as my decision maker.

The belief still holds in Nigeria that only those who take classes in art subjects can be lawyers. Being engaged in group conversations with my peers often time became discouraging because many of my friends laughed at my decision of becoming a lawyer. They made jest since I offered mainly science subjects in senior school. Yet, possessing grit, I refuse to falter in pursuing my dream of becoming a lawyer.

Another mentality I think Nigerians have is that if a child does not score a hundred percent in anything that they do, they automatically do not understand anything that they learn in school. But that should not be the case. Your intelligence should not be determined by only tests. To think of it, why then do we praise these so- called over intelligent people when we do not know if they actually scored a hundred percent in every test they took.

It is saddening that young people instead of being motivated are usually shouted at for not making perfect grades. Notwithstanding, every human has the same brain capacity so we all can get the amazing grades. Do not be distracted by people but instead focus on the most important things that you have to deal with now. Challenge yourself to do better than you could ever expect. Therefore, you need to work harder than you think.

I encourage people to never be discouraged in pursuing the career that they truly desire. An individual can be successful whether or not he/she is a science student or whether he/she had the best grades while in high school. Stereotypes we have in the Nigerian society should not affect what you want or what you would like to be in the future. Your drive should instead be moved by the passion you possess.

This is a call to readers to not be influenced by stereotypes in making decisions and allowing their passion for things be the true reason for choosing future careers.

Sneak Peak Into the Lives of a PhD Scholar: The Truth Bombs Revealed

By Mehwish Majeed

Since childhood, I had this innocent wish to have the title of a doctor with my name. Little did I know that earning this title needs a lot of sacrifices. The first and the foremost sacrifice is giving up your youth. Looking at the Facebook profiles of your age fellows getting married, traveling, and doing stuff normal people do is always the difficult part but then again we, the Ph.D. scholars have our own definition of happiness which others may not understand. So, are you ready to dive deeper into the lives of Ph.D. scholars? Let's get going then.

Finding that Special One

It is believed that your adult life depends on that special person that enters in your life. Well, it is fully true for Ph.D.'s as well, except that for us that special person is our supervisor. When people of our age spend time praying to get their dream partner, we are praying to get a good supervisor. Yes, not only our Ph.D. but our life after this degree highly depends on the supervisor we get for our Ph.D. thesis. A good Ph.D. Supervisor is like a ray of sunlight at the end of the tunnel. He/she is the one who is there to keep you motivated even in the darkest of times. In short, they are the ones who commit to being there with you in health and in sickness for better and for worse. Ph.D. becomes easy once you find that right person who is made for you. Well, I found one.

Seeing that Special Person Happy

We all have that special person we want to see happy. Well, once again for Ph.D.'s that person is his/her supervisor. For us, seeing our supervisor happy is the ultimate goal we strive for. This is because we know that if they are happy with our work then it means we are going in the right direction. A smile on their faces and a few words of appreciation are all we need to keep going.

Facing the Rejections One after the Other

Yes, you have read it right, we feel proud when we receive rejection after completing the review process as going to the review process in a top-tier journal instead of getting desk rejected is itself a great achievement. It's not that we only want to be a part of the review process but the point is that the rejection rate of top-tier journals is so high that you feel happy on just the fact that your paper was at least not desk rejected.

Getting the Support of the People Who Matter to You

Oh no, right now I am not talking about the family or friends. For a Ph.D. scholar, getting the support of the thesis approval committee is what is the most important. We feel lucky when we are able to convince our research board that there is a strong rationale behind conducting the Ph.D. thesis which we have proposed. I will not exaggerate it but this process is more or less like a war of a Ph.D. scholar versus the research board.

Watching Others Struggling

I will be very honest here, most of us have mixed feelings on seeing other Ph.D. scholars being stuck in their research or living a single life or facing rejections from journals. It's not that we are selfish or jealous but seeing others facing the same issues make us feel relaxed that we are not the only people facing problems in Ph.D.

This is our life and these are a few little moments of happiness for us. The truth is only a Ph.D. scholar can understand this. So if you are a Ph.D. scholar then always remember that there comes ease after every hardship. Sometimes, you may feel that it is not worth it, that no one in the world understands the stress you are going throughout this degree but let me assure you, your family and friends may not understand this but they surely want to see you happy. If you have managed to earn this status then you can definitely reach your final destination as well. So be brave and keep working hard.

Outsourcing Contributed to Counterfeiting of American Brands

By Catherine Salomone

I'm not any kind of a genius, but as an American female 'shopper', I most certainly qualify as an expert. Us American girls have this shopping thing down pat, especially when it comes to saving money on our favorite brands. There are certain brands that are must haves for most of us, and for me, blue jeans and leather are two things that I do have favorite brands for. Don't most of us? Some will say they will only wear Wrangler jeans, others prefer Levis. This has been an age old debate, kind of like Coke and Pepsi.

As it turns out, my two favorite brands for leather and jeans, have always been Coach Leather Ware and Levis jeans. I have been buying these products my entire life. When it comes to leather, there are many choices. Some will only buy Wilson's leathers, others insist on Harley Davidson Leather, and the list goes on. All of these name brands I have mentioned, originated in the United States and were manufactured in the USA for decades..

As the years went by I began to notice serious changes in my favorite brands, and it didn't take me long to understand, that it was because these products were now being outsourced to other countries, mostly, China. I began noticing the material was thinner and just not the same on our Levis. Coach Glove Tanned Leather, was also a favorite of mine, and I began to notice the leather was thinner, and just not as good, and instead of using genuine brass or nickel hardware, they starting using cheap painted metal alloys and plastics. What happened to our favorite brands?

Not only were they not being produced here in the USA anymore, they started making fake counterfeits of these brands! So it got where, just because it had the brand name Levis or Coach on it, didn't necessarily mean it was one of their products! Shopping for these brands turned into a nightmare! Literally, a nightmare! I had to start studying every detail, just to be sure I was getting the genuine product or not! All of a sudden shopping became very complicated.

All of this started when we made the mistake of producing our famous products in other countries. They stole our precious secret recipes for success, and found ways to make them cheaper and faster, which ended up in the counterfeit market. Literally stealing our brands! For shoppers like me, this was heartbreaking. How much more American can one get than LEVIS jeans? Our cowboys were wearing them for heaven's sakes! And now countries like China were duplicating and ruining them? How sad is that? And why did we let this happen?

Well, folks, it all goes back to our government again. They over regulated and taxed our American businesses so bad, they had to start producing in other countries and now we are all suffering from the results. I shouldn't have to study a pair of jeans for two hours, just to make sure they are the brand I want! I shouldn't have to become a handbag expert, just to make sure the Coach bag I am ordering, is genuine or not. I should be able to shop for sales, without having to worry about getting ripped off! But sadly, this is the world we live in now, and we can thank our government for this!

I am sure most of you know that almost everything is outsourced to China now, and no matter what your favorite brand is, you have most likely noticed the difference in the quality, compared to how it once was. Unless you were not around before it happened, then you really can't miss, what you never had. I almost feel sorry for younger folks that never got to experience the same quality that I did, back when our products were still made in the USA, even something as simple as a pair of Levis jeans. I wonder how many of you knew that Levis are actually counterfeited now? YES, they are making fakes of Levis jeans! Hard to believe, but true, nonetheless.

This actually makes me quite angry! Where do the Chinese get off stealing our companies names, logos and ideas, without their permission? Wasn't it enough we gave them all of our jobs? Did they really have to steal all of our ideas and business names? I don't normally like to get political, but it seems to me, we finally have leaders in this country that want to change this, and for some reason, unbeknownst to me, there are 'some' that don't want our businesses back? They think this should continue? I should have them try to find me a real Coach bag some time! Or a pair of Levis! Maybe they don't have to shop for sales and can go pay full price directly from the designers themselves? Lucky them! But what about the rest of us?

Isn't it something how the actions of these politicians can affect us consumers? Wouldn't it be great if their actions could affect us in a positive manner instead of so negatively? Makes you wonder whose side they are on, because it sure doesn't seem like they've ever been on our side. Is depressing to know our own government cares more about making other countries happy, than their own people. All of this from an American female shopper! I feel as if I am being targeted, and you know what? I am! I am being targeted by criminal counterfeiters and find myself avoiding them at almost every corner I turn, especially on the internet. It's not only sad, but creepy! How could our country let this happen to us girls? Used to be so much fun shopping for sales of my favorite brands. Now it is nothing but a nightmare! I truly hope our leaders do something and get this back to normal again.
Wouldn't it be great to see MADE in the USA, back on all of our labels again? I haven't seen that in so long, I almost forgot what it looks like! This has totally gotten out of hand. We better get control of it, if it isn't already too late?

So you see? Outsourcing to countries like China was a bad idea from the get go! Why didn't we just keep our businesses and products here, and make other countries pay double if they want them! Instead of them charging us double for less quality of our own brands? What is wrong with this picture, besides everything? I want my Levis back! Do you know that I actually look for used 'Made in the USA' Levis now? Yes, even used, the old Made in USA Levis were so much better, more comfortable and not to mention the fit! Now a 32 X 34, is actually a 28 X 30! Is ridiculous! And you know what's even worse? The counterfeiters have figured out there is a market for USA Levis now, and they are even making fakes of them! Putting USA labels on them! It's just a vicious endless battle! Why on earth should it be so complicated to get a simple pair of Levis jeans? I guess I already answered that, because we were dumb enough to give away old secret family recipes! We gave them all to other countries and now look what has happened! A gal can't even get a pair of jeans!

Hopefully, we can keep making progress and get our businesses and products, all back in the USA again. Until then? it is what it is, pitiful! Talk about regrets! We should have took notes from our parents playbook and not gave away our old secret family recipes!. How come our parents were always right? What's up with that?

Relationships: Do Some People's Childhood Set Them Up To Feel Safe With Abuse?

By Oliver JR Cooper

While there are people in the world who are in healthy relationships, there are others who aren't. As a result of this, some people are going to be with people who have a negative effect on them.

Zero Tolerance

If someone is in a healthy relationship, or if they have had them in the past, they might find it hard to understand why anyone would stay with someone who treats them badly. One could even look back on their life and see that they have walked away from at least one person who treated them badly.

Through being treated badly, they would have felt uncomfortable and this would have given them the urge to cut their ties with them. But even if this hasn't taken place at least once, they are not going to accept bad behaviour.

A Different Reality

If someone like this was to come across another person who is in an abusive relationship, they could tell them that they need to get away. The other person could listen to what they have to say and heed their advice.

Then again, they could listen to what they have to say and continue to live their life in the same way. Clearly, this is going to be just about the worst thing that they could do - they need to get away.

Another Problem

There is also the chance that someone like this has walked away from an abusive relationship in the past, only to have ended up with another person who was just as bad. Conversely, they may have ended up going back to the person who they left.

From the outside, it can look as though there is something deeply wrong with this person. Instead of doing whatever they can to look after themselves, it is as though they are doing everything they can to harm themselves.

The Answer

One way of looking at this would be to say that this is someone who suffers from low self-esteem. Therefore, if they were to feel better about themselves, they would no longer put up with this kind of behaviour.

Now, there is the chance that this approach may work, but in order for this to take place, someone like this will need to take the next step. It is not as though another person is going to come and save them.
An Act

Yet, even if someone was to come and save them, it doesn't mean that they will have their best interests at heart. How this person comes across in the beginning could be nothing like what they will be like as time goes by.

At first it would have seemed as though their life was about to change, but as time passes, they will see that this was nothing more than an illusion. When one ends up with someone like this, they could even come to the conclusion that they are unlucky.

Self-Image

They are not going to feel as though they have much control over their life, that's for sure. Feeling powerless and helpless is going to be a normal part of their life, and they will be used to feeling angry and frustrated.

Going deeper, they may also spend a fair amount of time experiencing fear, anxiety and even terror. When this is what is taking place within them, the ideal would be for them to pay attention to this information.

Evasive Action

Their body is telling them everything they need to know, yet it is not possible for them to get away from their abusive partner. They are not safe where they are, so they need to leave and to be somewhere that is safe.

However, even though their life is under threat where they are, it is still not going to be enough to get them moving. It is then as though they only feel safe when they feel unsafe, and this is why they can't leave.

Inner-Conflict

The part of them that is supposed to keep them alive is not going to be functioning in the right way; if it was, they would be able to protect themselves. Also, the fact that this is what feels safe shows that something isn't right.

One should feel safe when their life is not under threat; what shouldn't feel safe is being with someone who makes them feel as though their life could end at any moment. What this can show is that they grew up in an environment that wasn't safe, meaning it wasn't safe for them to exist.

Way Back

During this time, they may have experienced some kind of abuse, and this would have caused their mind and body to be flooded with trauma. Being treated badly would then have become what was familiar and therefore what felt safe.

So as destructive as this was, being treated in this way would have been associated as what is safe. The alternative would have been for them to have been felt, and this would have been far worse than being abused.

Fear of Death

One could then have died through being treated so badly, but they would have definitely have died if they were abandoned. It was then a case of being abused and surviving or being left and dieing.

The love, care, and nurturance that they needed to develop a strong sense of self wouldn't have been provided. Additionally, they would have developed a craving for drama and they would have ended up being stuck in survival mode.

Awareness

If one can relate to this, and they want to change their life, it will be a good idea for them to reach out for external support. This is something that can be provided by a therapist or a healer.

What will need to happen here is that one will need to release the trauma that is being held in their body and mind. And as this takes place, they will gradually begin to feel safe with being safe as opposed to feeling safe with being unsafe.
