He Will Direct Your Paths

OBEYING GOD’S COMMANDS PUTS YOUR LIFE ON THE RIGHT PATH.

Bible Reading of the Day: Read Isaiah 26:3-7.

Verse of the Day: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will direct your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

The trail seemed to end at the creek. Lauren, Jason, and their dad had set out from their car three hours earlier on a backpacking trip, but the trail had been washed out in places, and darkness had fallen before they located their campsite beside a wide creek at the foot of the canyon. Dad searched the dark banks of the raging creek for the campsite but was unable to find it.

“OK,” he said, facing the two children, “so we can’t find our campsite. But we do know the way back to our car.”

Dad, Lauren, and Jason shouldered their packs and began the laborious three-hour trip back up the mountain. The trail was now shrouded in darkness.

“Jason,” Dad said as they started back up the canyon, “grab your sister’s backpack and hold on to it. Lauren, you can hold on to my backpack.” He pointed his flashlight at the trail. “And Lauren, watch where I step, and just walk where I do.” He turned and began walking slowly up the trail. Because they followed each other so closely, Dad would frequently shine his light on a slippery rock or an exposed root.

“Be careful here,” he would say, pointing his flashlight at the danger.

Lauren would then turn her flashlight on the spot and turn herself to make sure her brother could see it. “Dad says be careful here,” she would say.

Three hours later, the backpacking trio arrived in the parking lot again. They were weary, wet, and dirty, but they were unharmed. Lauren and Jason dropped their backpacks to the pavement beside their car and hugged their father.

“That was scary,” Jason said.

“Yeah,” Lauren added, “but we made it, didn’t we, Daddy?”

“That’s right, Lauren,” Dad said. “We made it, safe and sound. You want to know the main reason we made it back safely?” They nodded.

“Because you followed me every step of the way and did everything I told you,” Dad continued. “If you had tried running off on your own, or had stopped following me, we’d still be wandering around in the dark-or worse.”

The children hugged their father again. “I’m glad we followed your feet, Daddy,” Jason said.

“Me too,” Dad answered. “Me too.”

TO DISCUSS: Have you ever tried “running off on your own” instead of following God’s commands? If so, what happened? Is life always easy when God directs your paths? Why or why not?

TO

PRAY: “Heavenly Father, we want you to choose the path that we will follow.”

Secret Service

LOVE BRINGS SATISFACTION, NOT DEPLETION.

Bible Reading of the Day: Read Hebrews 13:1-3.

Verse of the Day: “Continue to love each other with true Christian love” (Hebrews 13:1).

“Wanna do something fun?” Mom asked.

Little Judy nodded her head vigorously. Her older brother and sister were both old enough to go to school, and she was left alone every day with Mom.

“You and I,” Mom whispered, though no one else was home, “are going to be … the Secret Service!”

Judy’s eyes widened. She whispered back to her mom, “What’s that?”

“You’ll see,” Mom said. “Come with me.”

Mom led the way into the kitchen. She explained to Judy that the two of them were going to spend the day doing secret acts of love for other people. And they did.

First, they baked a batch of chocolate-chip cookies, tied them with bright red ribbon in wrapping paper, and placed bundles of cookies on everyone’s pillows—including their own, “To keep the secret,” Mom said.

Judy giggled gleefully as they next tiptoed onto the screened porch of their neighbor’s house and left a bundle of cookies by the door for Mrs. Hastings, the woman who lived alone next door.

Finally, they left a bundle of cookies in their mailbox and sat together on the living room sofa, waiting and watching for the mail carrier to come. When the truck pulled up to their mailbox to drop off their mail, Mom and Judy closed the curtains and looked at each other, smiling and laughing at their “secret service.”

“This is so much fun, Mommy,” Judy said.

“Yes, it is,” Mom said. “Do you know why it’s so much fun?”

“Because … ,” Judy said, thinking. “Because it’s fun!”

Mom smiled again. “That’s right,” she said, “because showing love to others is fun. You see, giving love away isn’t like giving cookies away. You have fewer cookies than when you started, don’t you?”

Judy nodded.

“But,” Mom continued, “when you give love away, you don’t lose anything. You don’t have less love than when you started; you have more!”

“Can we be the Secret Service tomorrow, too?” Judy asked.

Mom nodded. “As long as you’ve got enough love left!”

“I have lots and lots,” Judy said. “More than before, just like you said.”

TO DO: Start your own “secret service.” You might clean a room, color a picture, walk a dog, or send new socks or slippers to grandparents with no return address on the package— whatever you think of. Make it your goal to perform your “secret service” sometime in the next seven days.

TO

PRAY: “Lord, you poured out your love by sending your Son, Jesus, to die for us. We want to be generous in our love for others this week.”

Those Who Knew Him Best

Bible Reading: John 11:25-27

I have always believed you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who has come into the world from God. John 11:27

YOU CAN GET a huge clue about who Jesus is by checking what his followers thought of him. Even though most of the people close to him were devout Jews worshipers of the one true God-they recognized Jesus as God in human form.

The apostle Paul had been trained as a rabbi; making it absolutely unlikely he would worship a guy from Nazareth and call him Lord and God. But Paul acknowledged Jesus-the Lamb of God-as God when he said, “Be sure that you feed and shepherd God’s flock-his church, purchased with his blood-over whom the Holy Spirit has appointed you as elders” (Acts 20:28).

When Christ said to Peter, “Who do you say I am?” Peter said this: “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:15-16). Jesus answered Peter’s confession not by correcting his conclusion but by acknowledging its truth-and its source: “You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you” (verse 17).

Jesus’ close friend Martha said to him, “I have always believed you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who has come into the world from God” (John 11 :27). Then there was Nathanael, who thought nothing good could come out of Nazareth. He acknowledged that Jesus was “the Son of God-the King of Israel” (John 1:49).

While Stephen was being stoned, he prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit” (Acts 7:59), acknowledging Jesus as God. The writer of Hebrews called Christ God when he wrote, “But to his Son he says, ‘Your throne, O God, endures forever and ever’ ” (Hebrews 1:8). John the Baptist announced the coming of Jesus by saying that “the Holy Spirit descended on him in the form of a dove. And a voice from heaven said, ‘You are my beloved Son, and I am fully pleased with you’ ” (Luke 3:22).

Then of course there’s the confession of Thomas, a.k.a. “Doubting Thomas.” After seeing the risen Christ and touching his wounds, he said, “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28). Jesus accepted Thomas’s acknowledgment of him as God. He rebuked Thomas for his unbelief-but not for his worship.

Those who knew Jesus best realized he was more than just a man. They accepted him as Messiah, God come to earth as a man just as the Old Testament Scriptures foretold. Were they sure? Well, they worshiped him. They obeyed him. And like Stephen, many of them died for the One who had died for them.

REFLECT: There’s an old saying that Christ isn’t Lord at all unless he’s Lord of all. Is he Lord in your life today?

PRAY: Talk to Jesus about letting him take control as Lord of your life.

The Jesus Question

Bible Reading:  1 Timothy 2:1-6

There is only one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and people. He is the man Christ Jesus 1 Timothy 2:5

SO WHO IS Jesus Christ?

People through the ages have fought over that question-often with words, sometimes even with weapons. Why so much conflict over one individual? Why is it that his name, more than the name of any other religious leader, causes irritation? Why is it that you can talk about “God” and nobody minds, but as soon as you say “Jesus,” people often want to stop the conversation or get defensive?

How is Jesus different from the other religious leaders? Why don’t the names of Buddha, Muhammad, or Confucius upset people? Because the others didn’t claim to be God, but Jesus did.

It didn’t take long for people who knew Jesus to realize that he was making some astounding claims about himself. He claimed to be more than just a prophet or teacher-he obviously claimed to be God himself. He presented himself as the only way to a relationship with God the Father, the only source of forgiveness for sins, and the only way of salvation.

For many people, that’s too exclusive and too narrow to believe. Yet the issue isn’t what we think or believe, but rather who Jesus claimed to be. What does the New Testament tell us?

Jesus Christ is actually a name and a title. The name Jesus comes from the Greek form of the name Jeshua or Joshua, meaning “Jehovah-Savior” or “the Lord saves.”

The title Christ is derived from the Greek word for Messiah and means “anointed one.” The title Christ captures two offices-king and priest-affirming Jesus as the promised priest and king of the Old Testament prophecies. That declaration is crucial to understanding Jesus and Christianity.

Jesus received honor and worship that only God should receive. In a confrontation with Satan, Jesus said, “You must worship the Lord your God; serve only him” (Matthew 4:10). Yet Jesus received worship as God (see Matthew 14:33; 28:9) and sometimes even demanded to be worshiped as God (see John 5 :23; also Hebrews 1:6; Revelation 5:8-14).

Maybe you’ve heard the phrase “the deity of Christ.” That phrase means he’s divine. He’s the Creator and Sustainer of the universe come to earth as a person, Jesus of Nazareth. He’s the God who created you. Jesus is your best friend, but he’s even more than a good friend. He’s God.

REFLECT: Explain it to a non-Christian friend: Who is Jesus?

PRAY: You can enjoy Jesus, relate to Jesus, learn from Jesus-but don’t forget to worship Jesus as God. Do that now as you pray.

Book Review - Stephen King's Sleeping Beauties

Sleeping Beauties
By: Stephen King and Owen King
Publisher: Scribner
Publication Date: September 2017
ISBN: 978-1501163401

A world where all the women have fallen asleep, wrapped securely in cocoons, while the men fight it out in a somewhat barbaric fashion takes center stage in a novel co-written by the father-and-son team of Stephen and Owen King.

Sleeping Beauties opens in the small town of Dooling, somewhere in Appalachia (surprise - not Maine!), where the local sheriff, Lila Norcross, keeps tabs on the petty crimes common in rural America. Her husband, Clint Norcross, is the senior psychiatric officer at the Dooling Correctional Facility for Women. They have a son, Jared, and are relatively happily married. After several chapters where the authors introduce the various players in this novel (and there are a lot of them!), the action starts. It seems there has been an accident at a local meth spot, that is quickly re-dubbed a multiple murder site. As Lila is rushing to the scene, she almost hits a woman on a side road. Stopping to help the woman, Lila soon handcuffs the strange woman when it becomes apparent that this unusual person is on some type of PCP... or something and is in need of help.

Evie, as the strange woman is dubbed, is taken to the women's prison for evaluation. At the same time, a strange affliction has taken over women on the other side of the world... and is quickly making its way to the United States. When women, and only women, fall asleep, they are enveloped by an odd white cocoon of a weird, sticky substance. They continue to breathe, and appear unharmed, but if disturbed, and the cocoon is ripped open, these women become extremely violent and kill everyone near them. As the virus, plague, or whatever it is, advances toward Dooling, Lila and the other women struggle to stay awake.

One by one the women in Dooling fall asleep, as the town erupts in chaos. Like the others, Lila eventually succumbs, and with that, Part One of this novel comes to an end. The second part deals with the men as they break up into two camps - one at the prison that is willing to risk all to protect Evie, who they are convinced is at the center of the outbreak, now called "The Aurora." The other group of men, led by a somewhat violent man determined to save his little girl and free her from her cocoon, is convinced that Evie needs to be captured, and sent to the CDC, or maybe killed or... ? As the battle at the prison heats up, the reader learns that the women who have been "cocooned" are not dead, but instead have been transported to a parallel universe or perhaps a time in the future (it's not really clear and left up to the reader to figure out). They establish a civilization and seem to be living in an almost perfect place. But as often happens, things do go wrong.

The premise of Sleeping Beauties is definitely unique and makes for a fun read. Now in development for a limited television series, it's no surprise as the typical "creep factor" so common to King's novels is present. Some readers may not like the fact that we never learn what, or who, Evie is, but rather are left to speculate on some possibilities suggested by the authors. Readers familiar with Stephen King's writing will likely notice a slight difference between the storytelling here as his son Owen takes on much of the tale (it was Owen who came up with the original idea). The novel is long, at slightly over 700 pages, and there are sections that seem to drag a bit, such as the battle at the prison. That's common in many of King's novels, and something most of his fans are willing to overlook. As previously mentioned, there are a lot of characters in this book and perhaps because of that, the character development is a bit lacking. But overall, it is a fun, unique novel that follows the format that King is so well-known for that will satisfy his readers.

Quill says: While not the "best of the best" of Stephen King's novels, Sleeping Beauties is definitely a satisfying read for fans of the "King," and of the genre.

Are You Struggling at Work? Here Are Three Ideas to Help You Improve Your Situation

Work is big deal, it is very serious for most people. As important as work is many people are unhappy at work. Entrepreneurship or as they call it "side hustle" is a better yet not seemingly easily attainable solution for most people.

I can count 200 reasons why happiness at work is important but for now let me give you just three reasons

Reason (I) you spend most of your life at work. Most people are at work for at least 10 hours a week - for many that might mean getting up at 6 am, getting ready for work, leaving home at 7am and getting stuck in traffic before you get to work at 8am.

So, if you spend 8 hours at work or 9 hours you probably spend more time with your colleagues than you do with your family. Just think about it, 8 hours every day with your supervisor every single day of the week translates to 40 hours a week with your supervisor and co-workers as opposed to the 16 hours you spend with family on weekends

Reason (II) Work brings in the cash, who said money was not important? Money is very important... we can't easily live without it. We need to cloth ourselves, we need food, we need shelter, we need or even want a good holiday every once in a while. More money is needed if you have children and a family to take care of. Money is so important the absence of it can raise havoc to our happiness and wellbeing. I am not saying we should worship money but I am saying that it is important

Reason (III) Work is important for your happiness, if you are not happy at work and constantly have work problems it is easy for those problems to creep into other areas in your life including your relationship with your family, husband or wife and everything else.

So, work is a big deal!!

You might be asking yourself, where am I going with this?

Research shows that as important as work is, most people are not happy at work. According to Forbes, 70% of people in the workplace are disengaged.

Why are people sometimes not happy at work? In general, there are three common work problems that most people have, maybe you are facing one of them, either (I) you don't like the work (II) you don't like the boss or people that you work with or (III) you are not growing or are not recognised enough (not enough pay, no promotion etc.).

I have learnt in my life from working and coaching many people that most work problems can get solved by just doing three things right. Just three things.

(I) Being strong

Back in the days I used to work for a company where there was a staff kitchen cleaner. Most staff members would arrive at work in the morning and go on with their routine, make a cup of tea, eat some breakfast cereals... make another cup of tea later on and so on.

Not many staff members ever said thank you for the great job that the kitchen lady did. But whenever she happened to take time off or was off sick everybody moaned about how dirty the kitchen looked as they couldn't find clean cups and things got scattered all over the place. So the work that the helper in the kitchen was very important but nobody ever noticed until she was not there. How many people are like that in our lives that we take for granted. Your work is important trust me just know that even if you feel unappreciated.

Some of us live in complexes, we have security control at the gates, and they open the gate each day with us going on in with our business and ensure that we are protected. We may not always say thank you for their effort but when the gate is not opened get upset about the situation.

I am trying to remind you that your work is important, every work is important, from the floor cleaner right up to the CEO. So in whatever it is that you do understand that your work is important because that is fundamental for you taking an interest in it which will allow you to be strong about the circumstance that you face and give you better ability to remain strong and positive.

(II) Knowing more

Secondly, know more about the business that you work for. Even if you are a floor worker at Pick n Pay or Shoprite or Woolworths or furniture shop it would help to know what your company does, how it makes money and what is important to the business. Can you imagine a floor worker at Pick N Pay that knows all the company board members names, how much profit the company made, how many stores it has in South Africa. Do you think this person can remain a floor worker for long with that much knowledge and awareness? I would live you to answer that question.

Knowing more about the business you are involved in helps you become relevant and become useful in ways that you can't even imagine. Before you know it you would become a valuable asset to your organisation and progress better in your company. What is excellent about knowing more is that even if you do not grow within your company you would always impress looking for work elsewhere because you will go to interviews informed and with the right level of thinking and self-confidence.

It is easy when you are not happy at work to get disengaged get passive. The problem with that is that nothing changes for you from your work environment because you are doing nothing. Instead of doing nothing I would like to advise you to know more. Whatever you do as a job, whatever business you are involved in, just know more about it. Knowing more leads to powerful change that is why some people who have worked for security companies or restaurants started their own firms doing the same thing. When you know more suddenly the boss has no unreasonable power over you. You get better positioned to change things, to reason and to influence things.

(II) Be initiative

Knowing more does not help if you do not take initiative and do more. What do I mean by doing more? I mean understand the needs of the business people around you, you supervisor, your company and proactively work hard towards meeting them. Do not just go about your daily routine, try to understand what your boss and your company values. Ask questions to your boss, what are the two important things that I can help you with right now? Then go ahead and help with that, then ask after you do whatever it is that is required, "is there anything more that I can do to help?" Being of service is important and it will help you become valuable. You will outperform many other people on your job. Your value will increase and your bank account will show that.

Being initiative is not just about working your job. When you implement the second advice that I gave i.e. knowing more about your business, being initiative can move you to a place where you are not just a restaurant worker and become a restaurant owner. You can get to a place where you are not jus a security worker but a security company owner.

What Can Go Right?

Many current societies raise their young to plan ahead and prepare for whatever problem or obstacle is to come. As a result, many people spend quite a lot of their hours submerged in a yet uncreated future, devising ways to respond to non-existing threats. All those hours consume a lot of energy and resources and result in plans that very rarely apply, as reality has the strange habit of turning into quite the unexpected.

As children, our parents do everything they can to teach us to plan and prepare for the future. They try to convince us that not doing it will unavoidably result in great chaos and dire need. Not planning for what is to come is considered pure thoughtlessness. We then go to school and our educational systems focus on the same principles all over again. By the time we leave school, most of us are constantly worried and, as a result, terribly stressed.

How useful is this approach, though? How many real situations have we been able to handle better by spending uncountable hours planning and devising? Not that many, let me say.

We plan, yes, but then something completely unexpected happens and our carefully scheduled solution becomes useless. We worry and try and foresee all possible complications in a given situation to later discover that things sorted out themselves or took a surprising turn that we hadn't contemplated. All those wasted hours!

Furthermore, as we muse and ponder, stress and frustration grow in us. We can never be certain that the line of thought we're following is the right one because we're still not in the future that so much consumes us, so it can't be tested. We therefore look for more possibilities, just in case. That constant search feeds on our energy and drains us, leaving us feeling exhausted. Overthinking can be as negative as not thinking enough.

Today I'd like to propose a different approach to you. What about setting a fixed amount of time aside for worrying and plotting? By devoting a LIMITED amount of time to trying to find a solution to the problem or to planning whatever needs to be planned, we usually manage to focus completely on the issue at hand. We know we won't have the whole day so we usually spend those minutes more wisely on really doing what needs to be done. Once the time is over, we need to stop worrying. Why? Because worrying for longer doesn't necessarily result in finding better solutions. If no solution was found in the time allotted, very seldom is a better one found just by stretching that period of time for ever.

The idea is then to let the subject drop from our minds and then devote the same amount of time to thinking about what can actually go right. Why? There are many reasons. Let's see...

We feel more motivated, hopeful and happier, which results in our brains releasing feel-good chemicals like endorphins, serotonin and dopamine.

We disconnect from stress-causing thoughts, which stops our brains from releasing an excess of worry-chemicals like adrenaline or cortisol.

We sometimes find unexpected solutions to the problem at hand because we open our minds to new possibilities and relax and give ourselves a chance to breathe.

We end up creating a constructive habit that makes the planning and worrying processes more pleasant and hopeful, as getting to the "what can go right?" phase is right around the corner.

The process might even spark some smiles in you and who doesn't like to smile?

If the problem persists or more planning is needed, we can start again by establishing some more "what can go wrong?" time followed by some more "what can go right?" time later. Alternating and using both gives you the best of both efforts.

Next time you find yourself worrying too much or spending too long planning your future, give yourself a break and start thinking about what can actually go right. You will be surprised by the results.
