The Real Problem With 'Text Neck'

Smart phones. Tablets. Texting. Social Media.

Most of us, me included, are hooked on our smart phones and multi-media devices.

This is a big problem. Why?

Because of the constant bending of the neck.

It may seem like this constant bending of the neck is no big deal because in most cases people don't feel neck pain from texting.

However, what is actually happening is premature aging and wearing down of the spine and discs. This is called degenerative arthritis or osteoarthritis.

And in a majority of cases, you will not feel pain while the spine is wearing down and degenerating.

However... fast forward 10 years, or 15 years, or 20 years, and the amount of spinal damage, decay, and aging that occurs and is seen on x-rays is startling. And to think that it could have been prevented or at the very minimum the progression could have been slowed down significantly.

I am especially concerned with kids and teens because they represent our future.

And while they are spending hours and hours on their cell phones texting and browsing social media, they are unknowingly and prematurely damaging their spine.

This is a huge problem that I believe can be avoided or at least mitigated with some simple proactive changes.

Studies have shown that youths aged 8-18 spend 7 and half hours a day using multi-media devices (TV, computers, smart phones, etc). That's similar to the amount of time an adult spends at work in a day.

And...

Out of those 7 and half hours, 2 hours a day are spent using mobile devices. That's two hours of 'text neck' occurring, daily.

So what do you do?

#1. Spend less time on mobile devices. Yes it's possible. But especially children and teens, they must minimize the amount of time using mobile devices and sitting in front of other media devices.

#2. If you find yourself on your mobile device for a long period of time, take a mini break from it and lift your head up for a breath of air. Put your head and neck back into extension to reverse the forward head position. Also, get into the habit of holding up your smartphone closer to eye level so you are minimizing the forward had flexion. Teach this to your kids too.

#3. If you or your child/teen has never had a spinal check up with a chiropractor, now is the time to have their spine checked and evaluated for any early postural problems or early damage. The earlier you catch the spinal problem the more favourable to correction will be.

#4. If you or your child/teen is currently under regular chiropractic care, keep up your regular check ups. This is the best way to stay ahead of 'text neck' and prevent further damage.

#5. If you have been given any home exercises by the chiropractor (traction, posture correction mirror image exercises), be sure you do them daily. This is the best thing you can be doing at home to counteract the negative effects of daily mobile device use and daily texting.

Their study also revealed that 55% of all respondents worldwide thought the garbage can would pose the greatest risk of transmitting germs to the family. However, the fact of the matter is the bath tub actually harbors more germs than the average garbage can.

Another interesting, yet forgotten fact is that a lot of germs can be found in some unsuspecting places as well, such as light switches, door handles, faucets, everyday appliances, telephones, tv remotes, electronic devices and computer keyboards. The Hygiene Council recommends washing your hands with plain soap and warm water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water aren't available to help prevent the spread of viruses and bacteria. Besides hand washing, keeping surfaces, particularly in the kitchen and bathroom adequately disinfected, and frequent laundering of bedding are the other keys to helping keep harmful pathogens from spreading not only in the home but throughout the community as well.

Although keeping a clean home is a priority for most of us, the toxins found in many products are just as much of a concern. The signs and symptoms of some of these infections may include:

The strength you show in your weakness, to share so honestly when you can; I find that amazing. That you can be courageous enough to be vulnerable when you've possibly never felt so vulnerable. I want to encourage you. Keep it up. Keep being you!

The fact that you keep showing up the best you can, even on days when you're unable to leave the house, and especially when some days you feel hopeless and barren, says to me that you're a fighter and not a quitter. Even if you feel like a quitter.

You have told me you often have no vision for the future, and the present looks so murky. That you keep living each day the best you can, even if it's harder than anything you thought you'd ever face, portrays a hope in you that displays a powerful faith.

2. Carrots. Carrots are another food to be careful of. Now, you do not need to avoid carrots entirely. In moderation, they can be a healthy and delicious part of your healthy eating plan. But if you serve yourself a cup of boiled carrots, these have a decent GI rating and pack in an unnecessary dose of sugar.

Cooking carrots tend to increase the GI (glycemic index) ranking, so if you are going to eat carrots, consider eating them raw. And whatever you do, don't peel your carrots. The skin contains most of the fiber, which will help lower the GI value.

3. Bran Flakes. Bran flakes are another food to be on the lookout for. Here again, many people believe bran flakes are a nutritious way to start their day, but this is not the case. The fact is, bran flakes may contain just as much sugar, if not more, than some of the sugary cereals out there. With up to 10 grams per serving, or more depending on the brand, it is one food to pass on.

Keep these foods in mind as you go about preparing your eating plan. They may seem like the healthy choice where your blood sugar levels are concerned, but the reality is they are not, especially for someone who is dealing with Type 2 diabetes.

Stomach bypass surgery, originally developed for weight loss in highly obese individuals, is now used for Type 2 diabetes control as well. Scientists at Heidelberg University in Heidelberg, Germany, found the procedure is also suitable for helping diabetic kidney disease.

The journal Deutsches �rzteblatt International reported in December 2016 on twenty people taking insulin for Type 2 diabetes and who saw improvement in their kidney function after the roux-en-y gastric bypass (RYGB). These Type 2 diabetics were moderately overweight or obese, with a body mass index ranging between 25 and 35. One year later and again at two years later, blood and urine testing showed their kidneys were working more efficiently and clearing more waste from their bloodstream. The researchers concluded the RYGB stomach bypass surgery could be a treatment option for overweight or moderately obese Type 2 diabetics with diabetic nephropathy.

Osteoporosis and Bone Density Drugs May Be a Problem

Women over 50 should be aware that their bones are thinner and this begins as early as age 30. Osteopenia is a lower bone density due to age and some doctors prescribe bone building drugs for it. It is not as severe as osteoporosis.

An American study showed some time ago that some women are taking way too many drugs for osteoporosis. In short they are being over-treated for bone loss and these drugs have serious side effects. The gist of it is that many menopausal women may be taking drugs they don't need.

The FDA in America has reported serious side effects of many of the bone-strengthening medications and that some women should not be taking them until they really need them. Whilst it is true that for women with osteoporosis, bone-strengthening medications can lower the chances of breaking a bone, experts argue that women with Osteopenia do not necessarily need the drugs. They are being taken at too early an age because women under 65 are being encouraged to have bone density tests which show a low result, they then start on the drugs earlier than needed.

Studies have shown that testing for bone density is really only effective for women over 65, yet it is recommended that women over 50 be tested even though they only have a 3% chance of a hip fracture from age 50-60 and only a 20% chance of fractures elsewhere.

An x-ray technique called DXA or DEXA shows how far below the norm you are with bone density and the norm is a healthy woman in her 30's. The closer to zero the better the bone density. -1 or higher is normal and -2.5 or lower signifies Osteoporosis. Between -1 and -2.5 is Osteopenia or low bone mass.

Most women in their 50s have some form of Osteopenia. It is not a disease. It is a marker for the risk of fractures and does not need to be treated with drugs. The reality is that people take the test and then spend more time worrying about their health than actually being unhealthy. Studies show that there is no evidence that long-term use of preventative drugs in women with Osteopenia will prevent fracture however drug companies disagree. Since bone loss is a serious issue they argue the drugs lower risk of that fracture providing real benefits. The debate is whether it is better to wait for the bone loss to be significant before starting treatment or to start treatment to keep the current bone quality. Others argue that women should wait until the Osteopenia develops into osteoporosis.

The possible side effects of drugs for bone loss such as bisphophonates used in America which includes Alendronate (Fosamax), Etidronate (Didronel), Ibandronate (Boniva), Risedronate (Actonel) and Zoledronic acid (Reclast) are many. They range from gastric problems such as acid reflux, heartburn, esophagus irritation, nausea, vomiting, ulcers or bleeding to muscle, joint or bone pain, oesophageal cancer, crumbling jawbone, fractures which are atypical, increased heart rate. Possible side effects of oestrogen receptor modulators are hot flushes, cramps, and clots. Possible side effects of hormones such as estrogen or progesterone (Premarin for example) are stroke, blood clots or breast cancer.

It needs to be remembered there are many natural things women can do to increase and keep bone density. Exercise, healthy diet, no smoking, low alcohol consumption are all pointers the medical and complementary medical industries both agree upon. Jogging, tennis, dancing, weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening exercises all build better bones and prevent fractures as well as developing better balance. Vitamin D helps the body absorb Calcium which increases bone strength so if you don't get enough sunshine or vitamin D in your diet you MUST take the supplement. The quantities of calcium and Vitamin D needed are quite high so it becomes very important. If you have a vitamin D deficiency you need to take at least between 2 and 4 1000iu daily until your tests register as normal.

Also get rid of the alcohol and cigarettes. Bottom line is that neither are good for your health and make sure you eat plenty of vegetables containing carotenoids. Which is worse? You weigh it up. Drugs? Or take your supplements? Those are your only choices.

Over the past month I have been thinking about the successful people as well as the unsuccessful people in bodybuilding, health and fitness in general. I have a LOT of contact with people locally as well as worldwide and here's what I have noticed.

"There are many smart trainees who spend way too much time pondering different strategies and ideas regarding training and nutrition. I try and get their mind back to reality. Don't over-think bodybuilding!"

This type of person is very knowledgeable and reads a lot. They are well informed and have researched all the latest training and diet information. They can discuss all the virtues and drawbacks of the different diets and workout programs on the market. They can also tell you the latest news about various internet muscle building Guru's, bodybuilding champions and fit movie stars. Unfortunately, despite all of their knowledge about bodybuilding diets and training routines it doesn't seem to be doing them much good - their physiques are usually subpar. This makes me think: is too much knowledge actually disadvantageous to building a great physique? Or could it be that they spend more time thinking about diet and training than actually doing the diet and training.

So what good is knowledge if the knowledge doesn't convert into muscular gains? If you cram your brain full of information on diet and training how are you to sort through all of this and determine what you should and should not do? Everyone says their diet, workout, supplement or whatever is effective or the best. The truly best diets and training routines are rare and elusive. The over-thinking bodybuilder is constantly trying to sift through all the information for what is "the best" routine they should be following.

The solution to the problem is less thinking and more action. When you over complicate bodybuilding you actually retard your rate of progress. Too many choices and too many high ideas create "paralysis through over-analysis" where the bodybuilder is actually paralyzed from staying on one routine or diet because they keep thinking that maybe they should be on a different diet or workout routine.

So what should you do? Train hard, heavy and often. Lift lots of weights, do your cardio workouts. A real bodybuilder is pumping iron 3 to 5 times a week and using all kinds of different methods for muscle strength and pump. Don't miss a workout unless it is for a reason that you really have no control over or an emergency.

Nutrition is the cornerstone. Without a disciplined approach to your daily eating regimen you will never be successful. Hearty and healthy eating is combined with intense workouts and cardio sessions for lowering body-fat down to the single digits. You have to eat clean foods.

Over-thinking training. The biggest mistake you can make in weight training is to continually keep changing the workout program. Train hard, train heavy and safely and on a continual basis and you can make almost any workout program a success. Once progress comes to a halt you take a seven to twelve day rest and start all over on a different workout routine. It's that simple.

Over-thinking supplementation.
