Type 2 Diabetes - A Healthy Weight in Childhood Helps Prevent Obesity and Diabetes Later in Life

A study from Denmark underscores the importance of maintaining a healthy weight in children. Researchers at Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg Hospitals and various other research facilities in Copenhagen, Denmark, compared the body mass index (BMI) in children 7 to 13 years of age with their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes throughout their adult life and found an active link.

Their study, reported on in March of 2017 in the journal Obesity (Silver Spring), included 282,827 participants born between the years 1930 and 1989...

children with below average BMIs rarely developed Type 2 diabetes.

women with high BMIs between ages 7 and 13 had about twice the risk of having Type 2 diabetes in adult life than those with lower BMIs at the same age.

men showed similar, although weaker links.

The BMI is calculated by dividing an individual's weight in kilograms by the square of his or her height in meters. Online calculators make the job simple. The United States National Institute of Health's website has a BMI calculator that works as well for pounds and inches as for kilograms and centimeters.

What are considered healthy BMI's in children are not the same as those in adults. Children change content as they grow and develop. A healthy BMI for a 10-year-old is not necessarily healthy in the same child after puberty. Percentile scores are used to compare children's weight for height...

an obese child is defined as one whose weight for height falls within the 95th percentile for children of his or her age.

overweight falls within the 85th to under 95th percentile.

a healthy BMI is defined as being between the 5th to under 85th percentile, and

a BMI under the 5th percentile is defined as being underweight.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, United States, makes available standardized charts taking into account the BMI, age, and gender. Healthy growth follows a smooth curve, so falling off the curve or going above it are signs of abnormal weight for height.

Another way of assessing body composition is with the measurement of skinfold thickness. Calipers are used to measure skin and fat over the scapula, a bone in the upper back, or over the triceps, a muscle in the arm. The amount of tissue grasped by calipers gives an estimate of total body fat.

Eating at regular intervals, avoiding foods high in sugar, fats, and calories, and taking part in regular physical activity all contribute to maintaining a healthy weight. Regular visits to the pediatrician will indicate whether all is well or whether changes in diet and lifestyle are needed.

Although managing your disease can be very challenging, Type 2 diabetes is not a condition you must just live with. You can make simple changes to your daily routine and lower both your weight and your blood sugar levels. Hang in there, the longer you do it, the easier it gets.
