Christ, the Rock of Ages

Psalms 42:9

Jesus is the Rock on which we build our life on "I will say unto God my rock," Jesus, according to the scripture is the Almighty God manifest in the flesh '"The mighty God," (Is. 9:6) Jesus declared himself to be the rock on which the church must build on "And I say also unto thee, that thou art Peter and up on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." (Mt. 16:18)

The word rock is used figuratively in the scripture, it often refers to God in the Old testament and Jesus in the New Testament as Matthew declares. As the rock of the Old Testament God claims to be the creator of heaven and earth and all living things, (Deut. 32:18) declares that God has formed mankind.

In creating us and God being a soiled rock we can place our trust in him and stand on the rock in times of troubles. The rock is here to stay and we can continue to walk on that rock in the midst of darkness. We find strength in God as our rock. Moses revealed these words in (Deut. 32:4) "He is the rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are judgment, a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he." In all things God is perfect and we receive all our strength from that perfect rock. When the enemy come in as a flood, the rock, the God of the ages becomes our defense and refuge "But the Lord is my defense, and my God is the rock of my refuge" (Ps. 94:22). We are protected by our God in so many ways in life.

The enemy is powerful, but not powerful enough to destroy the rock of ages. Jesus Christ is the rock of our salvation, "for in him we live, and move and have our being," (Acts 17:28) No double, the Spirit surely flows from Christ "But whosoever drinketh of this water that I shall give him shall never thirst, but the water that I shall give him shall be in him as a well of water springing up unto everlasting life." (Jh. 4:14 This rock will never run dry, in him flows all the life that man could ever desire. This living water comes from a rock that is pure, holy and righteous.

In the New Testament church Christ is seen as the spiritual rock. We receive the Spirit from him "He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire." (Mt.3:11) and again "And all did drink the same spiritual rock; for they drink of that spiritual rock that follow them, and that rock was Christ" (I. Cor 10:4).

On the day of Pentecost many received the Spirit of Christ into their being "And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost." In my closing remarks allow me to reminded you that Jesus is the foundation "Rock" of the church and it's cornerstone. The apostle Paul made this clear "And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone." (Eph. 2:22). Jesus Christ is calling all people to put their hope and faith in him, in him the rock of ages.

Jesus Christ is our rock - our foundation for eternal life.
