Regardless of whether someone takes the helms of a small group,
or gains the top leadership position in a major organization, many
wonder WHERE that individual might take his
organization/ group! Whether he ascended to his position unopposed, or
through a contentious election campaign, one can never be completely
certain what someone will do, and how, until/ unless he actually begins
leading. Some campaigns are rhetoric, and promises - filled, while
others are either predominantly negative or positive, but those of us
who analyze and review historical patterns of behavior, there is often a
wide disparity between one's campaign talk, and leadership reality/
behavior! Only, once someone gains the powers and authorities of his
office, is it possible, to know for sure, how he will handle his
responsibilities, and what he might actually do, etc.
1. Wishes; wants; what; when; why; who: One of the rude awakenings faced by many new leaders, is it's not always simply about what they wish for, or want. What will they do, and how will they get things accomplished and agreed to? What is their timeline, and when will they implement it? Why are they doing what their doing (their motivations, plans, etc)? Who will they rely upon and surround themselves with, and what does that indicate about the leader, himself?
2. Head/ heart; hear: Will the leader make a concerted effort to hear what others are saying, and listen effectively? Successful leaders realize they can neither rely entirely on their logical or emotion components, but rather must use these synergistically, in a head/ heart balance!
3. Empathy: There's sometimes a rather, fine line, between seeking popularity, or a populist appeal, as opposed to proceeding with the finest elements of empathy! No one knows it all, nor is it simple, to see things as others do! Listen more than you speak, and discover the needs, priorities and concerns, of those you serve!
4. Relevant; reliable; reach out: True leadership is not about pleasing everyone all the time, nor is it about looking (or even being) busy! Rather, examine needs, know what is a priority, and proceed with a relevant, sustainable solution, to improve things. Assure others they can rely and depend on you, because you are ethical and reliable. Have more than an open - door policy, but rather, reach out to others, in a supportive, meaningful manner.
5. Excellence; example: Seek better than okay or mediocre, but strive for excellence, in everything you do! Be someone others point to as an example, and let your actions speak louder than your words!
Simply because someone holds a position or title, does not necessarily mean, you must respect, believe in, or honor the man! Respect the position, but know what being a quality leader should include and represent!
