How Leaders ENDURE Challenges

One of the greatest intangibles, which makes identifying, qualifying, and selecting the best possible leader, often challenging, difficult, and/ or uncertain, is not being able to know, for sure, how someone might handle the stresses, challenges, and less glorious aspects of leadership. One should remember and respect the slogan made famous by President Harry Truman, "The buck stops here." While there are many aspects of leading, which are wonderful, there are times when positions of leadership become thankless jobs. How might you handle those situations? What will you do, to motivate yourself to persist and persevere, when lesser, or weaker individuals, might probably give up, and/ or quit trying? How will you be able to consistently maintain a true, honest, legitimate, positive attitude? In addition to all the skills, assets, training, knowledge, wisdom, etc, needed to be a real leader, let's consider how leaders ENDURE challenges?

1. Empathy; excellence: How strong is your sense of personal pride? Are you doing what you're doing to get a pat on the back, or do you truly care, and believe, you are uniquely qualified, to make a true difference, for the better, in the group, you will lead? How continuously will you maintain your efforts, and strive for excellence? Will you be driven because of those you serve, after listening effectively, and demonstrating the finest degree of empathy?

2. Needs; nuances: Whose needs will you try to address, and why? How will you do so? Will you merely do what everyone else does, in a cookie - cutter, or one - size - fits - all manner, or will you use whatever nuances, address the specific niche of your organization, and its stakeholders?

3. Delve deeply; deliver; disappointments: What will you be you reaction, when something does not go exactly as planned/ preferred? Will you handle the disappointments, or will they handle you? Are you ready, willing and able to continuously delve deeply, rather than merely examining the surface? Will you talk - the - talk, or will you be the rare individual, who walks - the - walk, and thus, delivers on his promises, etc?

4. Unique; usual/ unusual; usable: What attributes do you have, which are unique, and will serve you well, in being a quality leader? Are you able to handle both the usual, anticipated challenges, as well as the unanticipated, unusual ones? Are you skills usable and meaningful?

5. Relevant; reliable; reasoning: Will you focus on the relevant issues, or get stuck on the petty stuff? Will you be, both actually, as well as perceived as, being reliable? Have you taken the time, and made the effort, to refine and enhance your reasoning skills and abilities?

6. Example; experience/ expertise: Will others be able to point to you, as an example to emulate? Do you have the proper balance of relevant experience, and true expertise, needed, to make a real difference, and handle whatever might be thrown in your way?

Serving as a leader, will always have its obstacles and challenges. Do you have what it takes to overcome them, and ENDURE in a meaningful way?
