In my four decades of identifying, qualifying, developing,
training and consulting to thousands of actual and/ or potential
leaders, I have come to believe, one of the most challenging obstacles
to address, is determining, discovering, and deciding what they should
pay the most attention to, and choose as their top priority. Since many
individuals opt to enter leadership, because of their desire to serve
and help others, an internal conflict often develops, when they have to
admit, they can't be all things, to all people! Rather than taking this
personally, or internalizing issues, it is generally far more
productive, to determine what one's goals, and priorities are, and what
their group needs most. Therefore, effective leaders must decide and
discover, what to FOCUS on.
1. Feel; facilitate; facts: Before one can determine how to best proceed, he must carefully and thoroughly, give himself, a checkup from the neck - up. Unless/ until one truly knows himself, including his strengths, weaknesses, preferences, personal comfort zone, etc, how can he possibly effectively serve others? Part of being a true leader, is both knowing how you feel, while respecting and understand the feelings of others. Then, one must try to facilitate getting the right things accomplished and performed, realizing it takes cooperation and teamwork! Every time one focuses, he must begin with a realistic understanding of the facts!
2. Options; opportunities; opinions: There is almost always more than one alternative, to how one proceeds. Clearly knowing one's options, being prepared for opportunities, and having the ability and willingness, to differentiate actual facts, from opinions, is a necessity of leading!
3. Clarity; changes; cooperation; character: What is a leader's true character? Is he cooperative, or does he opt for the adversarial approach? Will he willingly accept and pursue the right changes (as opposed to those which are merely, change - for - change - sake)? The more one knows about himself, the better he is able to be a leader, with clarity of thoughts, ideas, and the ability to articulate his message, in a motivating manner!
4. Useful; usable: Proceed with a consideration of what you are trying to accomplish, and, thus, prioritize pursuing goals, which are both useful, and usable!
5. Stronger; sustainable system: Just as physicians should follow the Oath of Hypocrites, which states, a physician should Do no harm, a leader must seek to make his group stronger, as a result of every action, etc, he takes. The true measure of whether someone becomes a meaningful, effective leader, is whether he creates, develops and implements, a quality, sustainable system!
Never assume someone automatically knows what priorities are, and/ or should be! Hopefully, this mnemonic discussion, will assist and improve, a leader's willingness and ability, to FOCUS, effectively and productively.
