A Leader's Caveat: Beware Of What You PERCEIVE

How often have you heard someone refer to the adage, Whatever the mind of man can perceive and conceive, he can achieve? Yet, we often witness and observe, individuals in positions of leadership, who become their own worst enemies, because they permit their perceptions, prejudgments, and biases, limit their willingness to consider alternatives and options! I've often been told, during my four decades of involvement, identifying, qualifying, training, developing and consulting, to thousands of actual and/ or potential leaders, that someone would be able to proceed in the best direction, despite his personal perspectives. However, doesn't it make sense, doing so, might automatically, create a degree of inner conflict and inefficiency? Let's review, from a mnemonic perspective, why leaders must beware of what/ how they PERCEIVE.

1. Priorities; planning: Doesn't it seem somewhat obvious, one would determine his priorities, in many cases, dependent upon, his personal perspectives/ beliefs? If you don't believe something will work, you'll probably shy away from doing it! As Henry Ford is credited with saying, You can believe you can, or can't; either way you'll be right! Obviously, great leaders opt for the most meaningful goals and priorities, and use their leadership planning skills and abilities, to pursue these. Don't let how you perceive, get in the way of effective leadership!

2. Empathy: Effective leaders focus on the needs, goals, priorities, perceptions, and concerns, of those they serve. Never believe you know what others believe, unless/ until, you proceed, listening effectively, observing, and with a high degree of empathy!

3. Relevant; reasonable: It's not a great idea, unless it is a relevant one! The greatest goals, unless others embrace them as meaningful, and reasonable, will never motivate others, as one must do, to get things accomplished effectively!

4. Cooperate; character; creativity; choices: Don't tell others what to do, but rather, articulate your reasons, in a motivating manner! Be cooperative rather than adversarial, as the adage, You can attract a bee, with honey! Be someone others respect, because of the quality of your character. Look at better ways to get things done, using a combination of creativity and expertise! One's service will, inevitably, be judged, by the choices made!

5. Example: Rather than being a Do as I say, not as I do, type of leader, become the example, others point to proudly, and hope to emulate!

6. Ideas; integrity; ideology: Proceed with absolute integrity, be a leader with/ of ideas, and maintain the ideology, your organization, and its mission, demands!

7. Vital, vibrant vision; visionary: What is your vital, vibrant vision, and does it align with the mission and needs, of your organization and constituents? Will you become a visionary leader, who decisively proceeds, making decisions and taking relevant, timely actions?

8. Excellence; earn: You can't behave in a mediocre manner, and demand excellence in others! Earn respect, and foster cooperation and involvement, by being, an excellent leader!
Your attitudes and perceptions can either be your friend, or become your worst enemy! Beware of what you PERCEIVE!
