The Twin Effects of Juju and Cocaine

Kwame Mainu's assistant on the staff of Warwick University, Sandra Garg, had helped with the industrial development programme in Ghana. On a visit to Kumasi, she had started a relationship with Nelson Evans-Agyei, a young academic engineer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. Unfortunately, when Nelson was offered a chance to visit Warwick, he was persuaded by drugs traffickers to carry some extra baggage. This mistake was deemed by some of his compatriots to have determined his fate in two different ways.

After arriving safely in Coventry, Nelson realised that the carved wooden elephant he was asked to bring might contain drugs, and gave it to Sandra to hide. He had also brought two carved wooden fertility dolls, traditional artefacts intended to increase fecundity. Fearing the possible consequences of giving these to Sandra, he hid them himself in the diesel engine laboratory. One by one the artefacts were discovered and found to conceal cocaine. Nelson was arrested, tried and sentenced to a term in prison. Much to everyone's surprise, Sandra applied for maternity leave and in due course gave birth to twin girls.
A few months later, after a meeting with Professor Thomas, Kwame hurried back to report to his boss, Professor Tom Arthur. He was surprised to find all the staff crowded into Tom's office. The centre of attention was Sandra Garg and her twin baby daughters. 'Come on in, Kwame,' called Tom, 'If you can find any space!'

'Push the pram outside,' Sandra said, 'It's taking up too much room.' She was holding one of the babies, now about three months old, and Alice, Tom's secretary, was holding the other.
'Which one is the older?' asked Kwame.
'They're twins, born at the same time,' Sandra laughed.
'One must have been born first.'
'Oh, that's the one Alice is holding, Shita.'
'In Ghana we call her panin or elder,'
'And what do you call her sister, Sylvia?'
'She's kakra, little one or junior,' Kwame said.
'Whatever you call them, I think they're lovely,' Alice said.
'Be careful,' said Mick with a wink, 'the next person prof sends to Ghana might be you!
From the look on Alice's face it seemed she wasn't sure whether Mick was joking.
'Don't worry, it will be OK as long as you don't bring back any fertility dolls,' Tom said in an attempt to confirm the humour. Then he said to Sandra, 'Can we invite you home after work? The ladies would love to see panin and kakra.'
