Life is proverbially uncertain, "... We know not what shall be on the morrow" (James 4:14). All of us live among the unexpected. We must not take nothing for granted that is still in the future. We must keep in our mind the idea of the unexpected puts an end to carnal security.
The membership of the church is mixed; there are tares and wheat placed one with the other. There are those that may be cold or hot and there is also the lukewarm. There are some that love God and some who do not. Yes, there are some who have never said they were for him or against him. Let me say the true ideal of a Christian life is one of watchfulness, activity and love; these qualities are not to be found in the non-spiritual people.
In today's world, there is much preoccupation. Spiritual things ought to get our first and foremost and continuous attention. "... But seek ye first the kingdom of God" (Matt. 6:33). The non-spiritual eat, drink, marry and are given in marriage again and again, and so often events come upon them because they are unaware. The bridegroom came as all ten virgins slept (Matt. 25:1). I have found that most people is foolish in proportion to the interest involved (salvation); it is criminal in proportion to the plainness of the arousing circumstance, (Hell).
There is much blindness in today's world. The natural man is blind when it comes to the spiritual things of God. "... But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God for they are foolishness unto him" (I Cor. 11:14). Most men do not see the beauty of spiritual qualities nor the need of spiritual principles, nor the inviolability of spiritual deliverance, nor the grounds of spiritual assurance, nor the evidences of approaching Divine action. Men do not adequately realize sin as to it's guilt or danger. Most people live calmly as if it were the normal thing.
It appears that people anticipate no evil and no disturbance, but assume that there will be no change. So many people's life has become stereotyped, their conscience is silent, and there is a quiet strong delusion within them and around them.
There is a cause of self-security called prosperity. Because we have had no change, we often forget God. We often say, as life has been, always will be. So much of the time unbroken prosperity is unfavorable to many spiritual people, or any people as far as that goes.
The course of salvation in one's soul is the progress of a warfare between flesh and spirit. Victory is not won without a struggle. Spiritual principle waxes stronger only under obedience to true Bible teaching and by the power of the Holy Spirit. You may rest assure that our flesh gets weaker only by being crucified. "... No man can servant two master" (Matt. 6:24). The scripture teaches "... He that walketh with wise men shall be wise." Familiarity with sin breeds tolerance of it. A sinful example is a temptation to sin.
Keep in mind sin blinds and hardens our heart. The more sin a person commits, the less he see it's consequences. The scripture says to the willful sinner, "... Woe to them." Woe comes before the downfall. "... Be not high-minded, but fear" (Rom. 11:20). Before the disciple Peter ascend in his own imagination, his fall was a foregone conclusion. (Matt. 26:33,34.
In closing, may I say 'carnal security is in proportion to blindness, and blindness is in proportion to corruption.' When a sinner feels most secure, he most of all deserves his woe, and least of all on his guard against it, "... For when they shall say, peace and safety, sudden destruction cometh upon them" (I Thess 5:3).
"Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward" (Isaiah 1:4).
