Type 2 Diabetes - Are You Overdosing on Vitamin D?

Vitamin D is an important nutrient people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes must ensure they are taking in enough of each and every day. According to a research study published back in 2004 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, this powerful antioxidant increases insulin sensitivity by up to 60 percent. That rating is even better than the number-one diabetes drug metformin, according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1998. Sadly, many people fall short. This vitamin can be trying to take in as it is not found in very many everyday foods unless you are consuming larger amounts of fortified milk or orange juice, both of which are not recommended on a diet for blood sugar management.

If you have Type 2 diabetes, this is one of the most important nutrients you can take. When most people are tested with a simple blood test, they usually come up low on Vitamin D. Many people chose to add Vitamin D to their supplement regimen instead of relying on food intake. But you need to be careful with any supplement you take. Especially with vitamin D as it is a fat-soluble vitamin and if you take in too much, you may reach toxic levels.

What are some of the signs you are taking in too much vitamin D? Let's go over the main signs...

1. Higher Than Normal Blood Calcium Levels. Because one of the primary roles of vitamin D is to help your body better absorb calcium, one of the first signs of vitamin D toxicity is higher than normal calcium levels. You likely won't feel any side effects, but it would be present on a blood test you have done.

Going for periodic blood work is always a good idea to keep tabs on your health and watch for anything you may otherwise not notice.

2. Nausea And Loss Of Appetite. One physical symptom you will see though is nausea and a loss of appetite. If you feel you don't want to eat, something is behind that, especially if you normally enjoy eating.

It is easy to associate nausea with other issues as well, but do pay attention to when it occurs and how much vitamin D you are taking.

3. Diarrhea. If nausea and loss of appetite are accompanied by diarrhea, that is another sign indicating you could be taking in too much vitamin D. Of course; there are other problems causing diarrhea, so go to your doctor and be examined.

It is never a bad move to take your health seriously and find what may be causing potential health problems.

4. Kidney Failure. In very severe cases where you are taking in way too much vitamin D, this can potentially lead to issues related to renal impairment. Your kidneys need to process all the substances you put into your body, and when vitamin D levels reach high levels, this can be very hard on your kidneys to filter. Usually, it does take very high dosages to get to this level, though.

So do supplement, but don't go overboard.

Although managing your disease can be very challenging, Type 2 diabetes is not a condition you must just live with. You can make simple changes to your daily routine and lower both your weight and your blood sugar levels. Hang in there, the longer you do it, the easier it gets.
