Cavities in Kids: What Happens When They Aren't Taken Care of?

Children are often at an increased risk of cavities due to several factors. Certain risk factors can increase a child's risk of developing cavities, such as poor nutrition, lower socioeconomic status, and lack of insurance.

Unfortunately, children that have cavities that do not have insurance are often left to suffer while their parents save the money to get the problem taken care of. This can be more than an inconvenience to children, it can cause problems that may last a lifetime.

Lower Self-Esteem

When children do not have a healthy smile, they do not have a pretty smile. No matter what a parent says, a child will often feel self-conscious about their smile, resulting in them shying away from their peers, developing lower self-esteem and they may fall into a depression.

Low self-esteem can then have a snowball effect because it leads to an increased risk of teen pregnancy, drug abuse and risky behavior when children turn into teenagers.

Decreased Functioning

Dental disease can cause excruciating pain in both children and adults. This can interrupt the child's sleep patterns, create problems at school, and cause problems at home.

For example, if a child is in pain and cannot sleep, they will feel irritable. Then, they will feel even crankier because they are in pain. This can result in them not having the coping skills to deal with minor stressors.

When another child picks on them at school, they are more likely to get in a fight or react by screaming or shouting instead of telling the teacher like they normally would.

Respiratory Problems

When the teeth are not brushed properly, the bacteria found inside of the mouth can be breathed into the lungs. This can result in several problems, including, but not limited to, upper respiratory infections, increased risk of breathing complications like COPD, and worsening of pre-existing conditions such as asthma.

Many people do not realize that children not brushing their teeth or receiving proper oral care can result in this, but it makes that battle with children at the end of the night that much more important.

But, what if There is No insurance?

The primary reason that children do not receive proper oral care is due to a lack of insurance. Government insurance programs are available, but many families make too much money, yet they do not make enough money to cover the costs of a trip to the dentist or get their own insurance.

In situations like these, low cost dental plans can be the perfect solution. Dental plans help families get the care that they need at a low cost, just like medical insurance does. Dental plans are usually available much cheaper than insurance, and can save families hundreds of dollars on a trip to the dentist.

If low cost dental plans are not an option, there are still plenty of resources available to help children get the care that they need. For example, free clinics are held throughout the country on a yearly basis. A quick call to a referral service, such as 211, can help parents find low cost dental services or plans in their area.

When children do not receive proper oral care, it can have negative consequences that will last a life time. It can increase the risk of heart failure, stoke, pregnancy complications later in life, giving birth to a baby that will have a low birth weight and many other things. Companies created low cost dental plans to help these families save money while still getting their children the oral care that they need to be both happy and healthy.

Avia Dental was established in 1994, with a goal to help every person get the care that they need. They currently offer several discount programs for families, individuals and groups in order to help their customers afford better care without having to pay full price.
Although Avia Dental does not offer dental insurance, the discounts that customers receive help to greatly offset the cost of medical care, saving them as much money as some insurance plans do. Various plans are available to meet the needs of different individuals and groups. Members can receive discounts on prescriptions and vision at no additional cost.
