Lipstick And Cosmetics: What Do You Know About Them?

We are often of the opinion not knowing anything about things and playing ignorant is a better way, but it's a different matter when it comes to our health. One of the latest research reports about lipstick and cosmetics confirms most of the findings from other reports. Lots of effort and time being put into research and this is the only way we can find out what plays behind the screen. Knowing how and of what things made from of that we use or consume, having that knowledge only than everyone can make their own decision. When you read about all the ingredients and pigments used it does make you think about the consequences and certainly raises a red flag for many of us.

First of all let's look at the market. The annual revenue in the cosmetic industry "only" in the US is almost 56 billion each year. This is just some of telling how much of cosmetics being used every day to reach such a huge yearly amount. According to this research, on average women will apply as much as 4 KG almost 9 LB of lipstick in her lifetime and to make this even worse she will swallow a big percentage of it. Most women wear lipstick daily and refresh it most of the time after eating; this can occur several times per day. Many have a large collection of lipsticks in the makeup kits to choose from to match colours of clothing's etc.

No Control Or Requirements

There is no or very little of control or requirements by government of testing cosmetics before being used. Although the many ingredients and colour additives in lipsticks have raised some concern by authorities. As many blend of chemicals such as heavy metals, fish scale, snail slime, pesticides among others seem no or little concern. Practically this means manufacturers of cosmetics have a free hand in developing their products with no restrictions. As long as the product looks good, makes you feel better momentarily, is well presented, so people will buy it. There are no labeling requirements of content or how this could effect your health one, two, or three decades later.

These are facts and is well documented about illness and cancer caused from cosmetics. We shouldn't ignore many years of science and research which is telling us where illness is coming from, and cosmetics is just one of them. This is not something much talked about and it seldom makes any headlines in the evening news.

Lipstick Ingredients

The skin absorbs anything that's sprayed or rubbed on and can go direct into the blood stream. Lipstick is different in that instant; lipstick is the only one from all the cosmetics that actually ends up in your stomach. This is why it is important for you to know how and what lipstick is made from! The largest ingredients going in to the product are waxes, alcohol, pigments, oil and the ones already mentioned above.

Although, there are some natural ingredients used, such as fish scale, snail-slime etc. Snail creams can promote better, softer, smoother skin if no added chemicals used. There is no standardization for the type, number or amount of ingredients used by manufacturers. The number one effort is to improve the wearability, durability and customer's satisfaction with their lipstick and will continue to experiment with chemical additives for the perfect product but far from considering the health of the end-user.

These are ingredients commonly used in cosmetics, moisturisers, sunscreens etc. increasing the risk of any type of illness. According to the report heavy metal hazard is a big concern in face make up and lipsticks. Tests being done at random of all the makeup items such as concealers, foundations, powders, blushes, bronzer, mascaras, eyeliners, eye shadows and lipsticks or glossier. The test revealed serious heavy metal contamination in all the products.

The purpose of metals used is to give lipsticks their necessary pigments. As high as 97 percent of products contained lead and beryllium, 51 to 60 percent contained thallium and cadmium, and a smaller percentage contained arsenic. Most of the products also contained nickel, mercury and selenium. In some countries these metals carry a toxic designation as they were proven to trigger health issues.

In the case of lipstick being used many times and often increases the absorption rates even more. As in cosmetics, everything we put on our skin will finally finish up in our system. The only wise decision would be to use products with natural ingredients only, made by a reputable company that has a long proven history and track record.
