The Basis Of Leadership Decision-Making: Do The RIGHT Thing

Some decisions are simple to make (we call them the no - brainers), while others are more complex, complicated, and often, difficult. However, regardless of what a leader is called upon to decide, there must be one consistent behavior: Do the RIGHT thing! While that may seem obvious, it is amazing how often, it is not even considered, or certainly is not considered a priority! The morals, ethics, conscience, and will to do what's right for one's organization, and the constituents one serves, should be the first thing groups consider, when selecting their leaders. Unfortunately, when we observe so many, in various positions of leadership, we often witness somewhat of a dearth of these essential traits!

1. Relevant; reasonable; realistic; rational; reaching; respect: True leaders must consistently be reaching out to both actual, as well as potential constituents. They must focus on being relevant and meaningful, and possess reasonable expectations, and realistic aspirations. If others do not consider someone rational, etc, why would he ever listen to that individual? Many serving in leadership positions believe they deserve respect, because of their position/ status, but those doing the right thing, realize they must, first, be respectful of the needs, time, concerns and priorities, of those they serve.

2. Ideas; ideology; integrity: Doing the right thing, begins by knowing, appreciating and caring about what that truly means! One must maintain absolute integrity, in order to set the example, for others to look up to! Are your ideas meaningful, relevant and of - service to your constituents, or are they focused more on you, and your priorities? Will you share your ideology, in a motivational, meaningful manner, in order to inspire, and consistently, walk - the - walk, rather than merely talk - the - talk?

3. Gather; generate goodwill; growth: Groups which do not grow, often stagnate! How will you develop a way to create meaningful, sustainable growth, if your actions do not consistently generate goodwill, and clearly show you care? Will you gather people together, or will you set them against each other?

4. Hear; head/ heart: Will you make the effort to hear what people are saying, and understand their concerns? Will you learn to listen more effectively, so you can use the information productively, and address concerns, needs, and priorities? Can you balance your logical and emotional components, in a head/ heart balance, so you are capable of doing what is needed and necessary, in order to do the right thing?

5. Timely; trendsetter; tenacious: Merely having good intentions, rarely accomplishes what's needed! Only when one is capable of making well - considered decisions in a timely manner, can obstacles and challenges be more easily addressed! Doing the right thing, means, overcoming the tendency to stay within a comfort zone, or stick to the same - old, same - old approaches and ideas, and therefore, great leaders are also trendsetters! One must be able to focus, when lesser individuals are distracted, and do so, in a tenacious, best way!

Before you can become a real leader, you must first decide, you will become dedicated to consistently, do the RIGHT thing? Are you prepared for effective, meaningful leadership?
